I have asked for the help of you guys over the past few weeks to give input as to what long range gun you would recommend for someone getting into long range (up to 1000yds.) shooting. I have decided to go with a stock rifle to begin with and will certainly consider upgrading to a custom rifle if I see I have the ability to compete. Here are my choices:

Savage 10FCP, McMillan A5 Stock, 24" Barrell - .308 ($1049 at my local shop)

Remington 700P LTR, 20" Barrell - .308 ($1099 at my local shop)

Remington 700P, 24" Barrell -.308 ($999 at my local shop)

Thanks for your input.

Out of the box, the Savage that you mentioned will most likely be the most accurate out of the box, considering it's bedded, non-bedded I'd go with the 24" Remington because of a bit more velosity, unless you want a 20", that'll posibly work, but more like 800 yards for the 20" barreled one.

Off other options an SPS Tactical is cheaper and just as accurate (hearsay), or posibly a SPS-V with another stock of your choice for under $1100.

Make sure you post some pics. :)

I have one of the linked to Remington 700P's, and it is a fine rifle.

I've heard a lot of good about the Savage, but have not shot one myself.

No place to shoot up to 1,000 yds around these parts, but at what distance I can get, my rifle is far and away more accurate that I am.

But I'm sure that can be said about a great many rifles these days, and that's really all a fellow can ask.

I use a Serbu BFG-50 in 50 BMG with a Bushnell elite 3200 scope.
Rifle = $2200
Scope = $200
Some people like to buy really expensive $1000+ scopes for their $1000 rifles. I just don't see the sense in that. I'd rather have a $2000 rifle and a cheap scope. You can always get a better scope later and reassign your scope to another rifle in your collection. The Bushnell scope has a lifetime warranty and has been tested with 1000 rounds of 375 H&H magnum. The 50 BMG shoots really flat, even when compared with a powerful round like the 308 Winchester 700P. The Serbu is a 0.5 MOA gun (your mileage my vary). Scopes are interchangeable, but a lesser rifle is just a lesser rifle. Get the best gun that you can afford and worry about the scope later.

I had a Savage 10FP before and the ONLY complaint I had was the stock. I would love one with a McMillan stock. Isnt the one with the HS Precision stock cheaper? It was very very accurate.

Savage 10FCP HS Precision all the way. Absolutely love mine. I like it so much I went all the way and strapped on a Leupold Mark IV with illuminated TMR.

There are only a few complaints I have ever heard about the Savage line. First is that the plastic stocks suck. Their factory stocks do suck but either the HS or McMillan models take care of that. The trigger blade isn't something everyone likes but can be removed. The barrel nut is ugly. Those are the only real complaints I hear about them. Nobody has issues with their accuracy. More than the occasional rifle has been shown to shoot well. If I had to buy based on odds of what shot the best I would pick the Savage. I love the 700 and it makes an amazing action but factory form it hasn't consistently shown ability to quite keep up with the Savage, though I'm sure a few 700 fans will rail me about how great theirs shoots. Again no doubt there are many good shooting 700s out there, just that I have seen a lot of amazing Savages from the factory.
