I am in the process of building a new AR-15. This is my first. I have a Stag 5.56 lower. I was thinking of going with a 14-1/2" barrel with a permanently mounted flash suppressor but someone suggested keeping the barrel at 16" and then adding a removable suppressor. Then if the configuration of the basic rifle changes, I won't run into problems with having one more "evil" feature on the gun.

What are your thoughts?

At this time the current law require a 16 in bbl to be legal any way so I would prefer to have it as usable barrel and get the extra velocity of the 2 inches. I have had both and found the 14 plus flash is not any more maneuverable than a 16 with flash. Some will say it only adds 50 to 100 feet per second but it is added power in my opinion even if it is a small amount.

Now if you just want the cool factor and you don’t feel you will want to ever change it to the next cool new and improved flash suppressor go for it.

I know I am no real help.

Just go with the 16" barrel with the removable flash suppressor. Having the barrel 1.5" shorter isn't a big deal, and having the option to change the flash hider is nice.

I would most likely shy away from the 14.5 w/ flash hider, and go the full 9 yards with a 11.5" or whatever length and a SBR stamp if I was going to do it.
