I recently got a Win Model 70 and have a problem with the bolt. The safety lever is stuck in the fire position even though bolt has been cocked. I remove the bolt from the action, press the retaining pin and twist the rear or the bolt. As soon as the bolt reaches a groove, the firing pin slips forward preventing the removal of the rear of the bolt (click link below to see image).

No matter what I do I cannot move the safety lever from the firing position and cannot disassemble the bolt. Is this something that only a gunsmith can fix or can the fix be accomplished poor man style. Any input will be helpful.

Sounds to me like the trigger is out of adjustment. Should be a fairly easy fix

Three position safety? The safety in the intermediate (middle) position when the bolt is removed and disassembled? That safety needs to be in the middle position. Not sure how to get it un-stuck. Since you mention stuck.

This may fare better in the gunsmithing section.

Does the safety lever work properly when installed in the gun or is it frozen? Was it like this when you bought it or did it stop working after you got it. If it came like that the lever may be froze up with WD40 or some other old dried lube. Soak the bolt in mineral spirits(paint thinner), Kroil, Liquid Wrench or similar penetrating solvent. DO NOT use white vinegar or Evapo-rust. They will strip blueing. I've seen plenty of perfectly clean guns froze up from setting for years after WD-40 was sprayed in the action for rust prevention. Good luck and don't force the lever.

You are un cocking the bolt as you are unscrewing it. Re cock the bolt and put the safety in the middle position and leave it in that position as you depress the retaining pin and then unscrew the bolt.

Safety will not move when the bolt is in the action. Safety will not move from the fire position when I cock it. I got this rifle in the present condition.

So you can cock and fire the gun but the safety lever is frozen? Give it a soak unless you can determine if it was assembled wrong. But I bet it's gummed up. WD40 turns into a hard varnish and it's common for someone to soak the action with it before storing the gun. Soak it over night or better a couple days. I dug a little deeper. I had a M70 at one point so the bolt assy is fuzzy. I found this and yours looks like it isn't fully screwed in so the safety lever will rotate. Try this.

Thank you all for your input.

Scooter, that's right I can cock and fire. I think I'll soak it with wd40 tonight

I suspect someone tried to do a "trigger" job on that rifle and filed either the sear, the cocking piece, or both. That allows the cocking piece to go too far forward. That prevents the safety from engaging properly and if that doesn't happen, the bolt cannot be removed in the disassembly mode.

(The principle is the same as that of the 98 Mauuser or M1903 Springfield; the safety operates differently, but the principle is the same.)

Hope thats not the case Jim. If it is he should be able to push the FP back on the edge of a work bench enough to engage the safety so he can disassemble the bolt. But he'll need to replace those pieces if they were screwed with that much. Probably unsafe.

Typical case hardened Win part.
The lever has a burr locking it in the fire position.

Dis-assemble,blend & re-assemble.
