I bought a Winchester Model 100 in 308Win a couple months ago and finally got out to shoot it. The only problem I am having is 1 out of 4 rounds won't eject and the brass becomes stuck in the chamber. I have cleaned this gun with Butch's Bore Shine and the barrel and chamber look very clean but yet it's not extracting. The extractor doesn't look worn and when I let the bolt slam shut on the brass case the extractor really hooks onto the brass and then I can pull it out.

Any idea's as to why the brass is sticking in the chamber?

Rust?

My best guess would be that you have a rusty, possibly pitted chamber. I have seen a lot of semi- auto's, especially Remington 740- 742 types, that have the same problem your describing, due to rusty chambers.

I'd suggest using a bore light and a small dental type mirror to have a look inside the chamber. Most likely the gun will need to be dis-assembled to polish the chamber if it is rust. Try 3/0 steel wool wrapped around a bore brush with some oil to loosen the rust, then degrease, and cold blue it.

If not severely pitted, it will probably be fine after cleaning; if pitted, more serious polishing may or may not save the day. Keep it oiled in future immediately after a days hunt, especially if it's raining out, and to prevent condensation rusting. Wipe down the gas system if it get wet also. Hope this helps. Joe

Extractor Spring?

Your extractor spring may possibly be weak. I have had to replace a number of Win. 100 and 88 extractor springs with a stiffer spring. The extractor would let go because the spring wasn't providing enough tension. This may be the problem instead of rust.

You can make a new spring from the small compression spring kits that Brownells sell, or possibly Wolfe Gunsprings make a direct replacement for it? Not sure.

Thanks for the reply Gunsmither. :) The extractor seems fine because it holds onto the brass really well. The brass is really hard to pull out of the chamber, the one time I had to use my Gerber tool to tap the handle to get the brass out. I'll check the chamber real good with a light and clean it again. If I can't figure it out I'll be taking it to a smith. :(

Don't mean to threadjack, but there is a nice Model 100 at a local store for $400 w/2 Mags. Is it a good deal and is there a place where I can get reasonably priced mags or can I convert another mag to work? How accurate are they as well?
