Okay, so my grandfather gave me a couple of old guns, one of which is marked "Stevens Model 35, .22 Winchester Magnum Only" with "Savage Ind." next to it in small letters. I don't know much about this rifle, other than that Stevens was purchased by Savage back in the day, so it must have been made after that and after the .22 mag round was developed.
The main problem with this gun is that out of a 5-round magazine, usually 2 rounds will not fire. I know it's not faulty ammunition (I'm getting a "normal" brand, not reloaded or foreign stuff). I've taken the gun apart and cleaned it and I'm still not sure what I'm doing wrong. By .22 Winchester Mag, they do mean the WMR round, right? Not the WCF? I discussed this with the guys at the local gun shop, and they said that they thought the gun would have been made in 1940 or so, and that it probably shot the .22 WMR, but I'm not sure they really knew (they didn't look at the gun, just listened to a much less detailed description than what I've given here).
Anyway, a basic summary of what the gun looks like, as well as the markings follows here:
-Barrel is marked as follows:
STEVENS SAVAGE IND. INC.
WESTFIELD MASS U.S.A.
.22 WINCHESTER MAGNUM R.P. ONLY Model 35M
-Has a Weaver brand scope mounted on it, made in El Paso, Texas (I know some old Springfields had Weaver scopes on them...)
-Bolt-action, wood stock
-partitions for iron sights, but sights have been removed
-checked pistol grip, checkered grip on forward half of stock
-5-round detachable magazine
-whole bolt does NOT rotate when knob is pulled up and back
-Serial number is E213---
Thanks a million, guys. I could really use some help with this one.
