Hey all,

I'm trying to help out a buddy put an accurate value on a rifle. It's a post-64 Winchester Model 70 XTR Sporter Magnum in .264 Win Mag, with a 1990 Serial Number. This is one of the older style actions, with the push feed and small blade extractor. The rifle is in almost new, very lightly used condition, and doesn't appear to have been fired much at all. There's a few light impressions in the stock, but no scratches, rust, or bluing wear that I can find anywhere on the rifle. The rifle wears a Bushnell 4-12x40 Scope with a Burris 1-piece mount and rings.

He doesn't reload, and wants to sell it to buy something that's easier to get ammo for. I do reload and have a lot of 6.5mm bullets around from my 6.5x55, and a lot of 7mm Rem Mag brass. I told him I'd buy it from him if we could come up with a fair price. I found some gun book values from 2009 that said the rifle was only worth about $330 in excellent condition, but that seems a little low, especially in such a rare caliber. I was thinking more in the $500 range. Does anybody have any information or opinions on that?

I've got a photo of it, but I'll have to post it up later from the lab. For some reason my computer is really freaking out right now and won't connect to my camera.

In a more common chambering $250- $350 or so is probably fair. The .264 is one of those love it or hate it chamberings. I wouldn't be interested at any price, but for someone who wants the round, like you, I can see paying a premium. $500 is about as much as I'd go. New production guns are better quality and can be bought for just over $700. With that in mind it is hard to justify much over $500.

Although the pushfeed Winchesters from the 80's and 90's are generally very good guns. They just don't have a lot of resale value. Can be a good thing if you want a bargain and are buying. Not a good thing if you are selling.

Nice cartridge and gun but probably worth no more then jmr40 posted. I wanted one of these about 1982 but never got it. Not sure I'd want it now either, to many bolt rifles in the safe.
