I'm thinking of getting a lever-action .44 mag / .44 sp rifle for close-in brush and dense forest hunting. Probably the Henry Big Boy, though I'd not turn my nose up at a Marlin, either.

Can anyone give me what is a reasonable expectation for the range and effective accuracy of these guns? My definition of "reasonable accuracy" means that the rifle will hit what I aim at, and that the bullet will still have enough power to kill either a deer, or a wild hog.

I know thosea are two different requirements, so please take that into account in your answer if you wish.

My GUESS is that 50 to 75 yards is going to be the best I can do over iron sights away from the range bench, though I'll obviously try to get better than that, especially if the rifle / cartridge can be good for 100 yards or more.

Thanks, all.

Both the Henry and/or Marlin will have great accuracy and stopping power for your needs and beyond. I'm currently debating between the two too. I will get on in a .357 to go along with my A&W 686 and the other in .44 to go with a S&W 629.
