I have been doing a bit of reading on Henry and their design... only to read that they copied Marlin. So... a question arises. Is this true; and if it is.... is the copy done on a "parts interchangeability" level, or an "I stole your idea and tweaked it some" level ?

Also... I need someone to sing me the praises of a .357 Magnum lever gun.

357 mag is powerful and recoils very little in a rifle. It is not as flat shooting at distance and stuff like 30/30 are a good bit more powerful, but 357 recoils less and generally fits more in the tube. You also have lots of different bullet types and weights to play with.

I don't know anything about copying designs. I never seriously considered Henry but since they are adding loading gates, they are on my list. The only advice I would give is to keep it light weight. Henry's octagon barrels are heavy.

Well if we are going to get going down the they copied someone else based on polymer furniture really should be saying they both copied Mossberg who I'm sure copied someone else.

As for taking full advantage other Dark and X series I'd be more apt to consider 45lc because heavier bullet weight and generally subsonic would pair better with a suppressor.

I meant the internals. The actual guts of the gun.

Ah. Misunderstood and thought you were referring to the model X specifically. As far as I'm aware "copied" is a bit of a stretch. I think "inspired" might a closer estimation of relationship between designs. They are not interchangeable to my knowledge.

I could care less about a suppressor. I want a muzzle brake. Tame the already tolerable recoil.

Not based on the Marlin, just based on lever actions in general. They didn’t invent anything new and they didn’t flat out copy anything of significance. If they did, there could be a lot less bickering over the differences and more over the similarities.

I can’t sell you on 357 in a lever gun. Had one for long enough to figure out that FOR ME it was a waste of time. 44 mag is a better hunting cartridge in every way but cost. As to cost, it’s a hunting gun so I don’t worry about it since I don’t put 1000 rounds through it a year. I have a 22 for that.

There will be plenty along now to sing the praises of the 357 in a rifle and they will give you a bunch of reasons that I just plain don’t agree with but they will try to sell you on it.....which it sounds like you are really wanting to hear anyway and not what I just said.

I like 357 lever guns because they're cheap, powerful and more fun than 22s. Don't get a lot of excitement outta shooting 22. I bought it at a time when cost of reloading was more important to me. It's still one of my favorite rifles.

For hunting I have a .270 so I don't really care about 357s effectiveness or lack thereof on deer. For rabbits and squirrels I'll use light 38s or 357s out of my Henry.

One of my dumbest moves was selling a NIB old stock Marlin 357, pre safety. I do have my old Win 92 that I had built up around 1965 in 357. It is a half magazine rifle and I wish it was a carbine. Two 30-30s, two 44s, one each Win/Mar and one 444. Want that357 back.

Son has a Henry Big Boy in 357/38 and it is just a HOOT to shoot..VERY well made, 100% reliable, VERY accurate, lots of after market ;stuff'...

I bought a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .45 LC. Very smooth nice shooting gun. The .357 would be much cheaper to shoot. The SASS people that I know say it is the preferred caliber. (I got the .45LC to match my revolver) After all my research I chose the Marlin, an older JM stamped model, over Winchester, Henry, and Rossi. I could not afford the Uberti or Taylor. The JM suits me just fine. As far as the interchangeability of parts I don't know - sorry. I heard the the 1873 models are the cat's meow....
