Here We Go Again

This is a direct quote from a Colt dealer at 1:10 in this video, commenting on a new Python they just received from Colt. Pretty sad when you can't even get the cylinder open on a freshly boxed $1,500.00 gun straight from the factory.

"Review of the New Colt Python: Don't sell your original one! We received another Python in today and couldn't even get the cylinder open. The parts were so poorly made, the cylinder latch is sloppy and it won't come straight back. How this could get by any quality control department "if they have one" is simply inexcusable. Colt may eventually get it right, don't be one of the first to invest in one. Jim"

My business gut tells me that a Python of yesteryear design and quality cannot be produced today by Colt with the present MSRP at a profit. Colt is a “mature” company with an established culture (meaning incapable of change) that (IMHO) is incapable of producing a Python worth having. A licensed or subcontracted provided of (say) Miroku quality is in order. Time for a big change at Colt.

I was thinking the same thing. This method has worked well for both Browning, (Citori O/U), and for Weatherby, (Mark V Deluxe). Both of those guns possess very high quality for the price. And rarely have issues or problems.

But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to happen. Colt will do what they always do. Take one step forward, and 5 steps back. As the dealer said, "Colt may eventually get it right"...... The problem is eventually we'll all be dead.

Not a huge fan of Colt revolvers but this is a new model and well, they wouldn’t be the first company to experience teething problems with a new product. However, the internet provides a way for us to opine immediately when we don’t have all of the facts in. I don’t derive pleasure from seeing an old American firearms manufacturer fail in any way and hope they get things sorted out quickly.

Bill? Bill460? Do you work for Ruger? You sure seem to be going after Colt with a vengeance lately. What the hell, we're not gonna need new guns soon, the way the gun control legislation is cranking up about everywhere these days.

But hell, ALL of the S&W 586s and 686s were recalled … so only over a hundred new Pythons? Hey, at least Colt is doing an actual recall. For those SIG-bashers out there, some are still ranting about how there never was an official recall of the 320 subsequent to the whole possible firing-when-dropped thing.

The linked video was excruciating. Guy with the corn-pone accent took ten minutes to relay 30 seconds worth of information.

As long as Colt gets folks their guns back quickly I think this isn’t a big deal. It took them more than 6 weeks on a Cobra last year for me, so I hope they can do these faster.

Heck, my new release Sig P210 had to go back to the factory before it worked.

When they put out complete garbage, and have the audacity to slap a $1.5K price tag on it, what do you want me to do, defend them for it like you are? Why do you think these guys are so above harsh criticism, when they put trash like this on the market? Are you related to them?

What was "excruciating" about that video was the disaster of a gun in it. But instead you want to mock the messenger because of his accent. Seriously? I own Colt's, Ruger's, and S&W's. A LOT of them. I'm not a fanboy of any of them. When a gun, any gun is crap, I'm going to say it's crap, period. If you want it all sweet and sugar coated, you're talking to the wrong guy. I hate to see people getting screwed like this.... And so should you. There is absolutely no reason for it.

Unforeseen delayed problems can develop in any design over time, prompting a recall. It happens occasionally. But come on, shipping guns out the door that are so shoddily manufactured, they can't even open the cylinder on them. Who is running the show over there, Mr. MaGoo? And I don't take anymore "pleasure" in calling them on the garbage they're putting out, than their customers do buying it.

I will stick with my Colt Army Special, TYVM. I wanted a Colt revolver just because, and it's fun to shoot at the range. It cost very little and goes bang every time. If I pay over a thousand dollars for something, I expect to be able to drive it or live in it. :)

I like the miroku suggestion. all the craftsmen are gone in this country.

I also like the miroku idea. As to all the craftsmen being gone, how much do you want to spend? Would you want to pay 4-5k for the craftsmanship of old Colts? Remember S&W never stopped making revolvers so they have a bit of an economy of scale thing going for them. And they aren't cheap. When kimber jumped into the revolver game, with a snubby no less, there price point wasn't far off from these new Colts. I am not a Colt fan per se, but they are a nice revolver. If the company can get over its poor handling of things this new Colt will be a sought after top shelf revolver. So let's see how they work it out. At least they recalled it with only a few samples out the door...

I don't think the craftsmen are gone. I think the general public is just unwilling to pay for it. In this very context, everybody wants a Python made just like the originals but they don't want to pay more for it.

Yup. Damned if they do, and damned if they don’t.

Seems like Colt is trying to split the difference - pricier than S&W by a little and than Ruger by more than a little, but a lot cheaper than a "real" Python made to the old standards would be.

I'm brand new here so I will be careful. Colt has tried to bring back a icon that wasn't cost effective to those who want one and can't afford it. I have a new reproduction Gold Cup series 70 which has been impeccable. I also recently purchased a new King Cobra Target which hasn't had any issues through 250 rounds. The trigger on it is simply incredible. I have a old cobra which trigger is simply not as nice as the new one. This new Python is reengineered and may have a issue. Colt will fix this problem if there is one I can assure you. Seems we have a Colt hater here in the wood pile. I simply say to him don't buy the piece of crap if you don't want. I'm a Glock and polymer pistol hater myself. Can't stand striker fired pistols. However there are a lot of shooters who love them. I'm happy for them and hope the market always moves forward for them. I guarentee you there will be issues with a lot of them as they are produced. It's natural. The companies producing them most generally fix the issues as they move along. Either that or go out of business. Colt employees are UAW union members. They make on the average $22000 more a year than Ruger Employees. Hard to sell guns cheaper when labor expenses are higher. I applaud Colt for bringing back icons. I hope they do well and continue making a profit. I do t think for a second Colt is making junk. The haters need to move on..
