Anyone here shooting any Heters shells? I haven't ever shot any of it before. I saw a ton of it at Bass Pro lately. First time I saw any of it. The display made it sound like it was some sort of higher grade ammo. However what I read is that it is actually economy ammo from eastern europe. What have you discovered about it?

It’s basically Cabela’s house brand. Is it cheaper than the shells at Walmart?

I didn't find much of anything at Bass Pro cheaper than Walmart. In fact most of the ammo was higher than anywhere else I shop.

I have 2 boxes of Herters #5 Pheasant high brass. They go boom and squirrels and crows drop, other than that nothing special to report.

Herter’s started out as a mail order company and morphed into a chain of sporting goods stores. Herter’s went out of business quite a while back I believe. Cabela’s uses/used the name on their house brand ammunition. It is not the best quality.

Depends on which Walmart ammo you're comparing it to.............. Personally, I find it to be better quality than the cheap Winchester Super Speeds or Universals but not as good as the Win AA or Rem STS/Nitros..........

I've heard that the older Herters was a European shell that Cabelas had branded but the newer stuff might be loaded by Federal.
Bass Pro has really hurt out Nebraska Cabelas stores in my opinion. I'd rather shop Wal-Mart than Cabelas now.

Any of it worth reloading George? Thinking 28ga.

The absolute BEST hulls to reload for 410 and 28 is the Winchester AA ones - buy a flat or two when Winchester is offering the $2/box rebate, (yes they ain't cheap at $11/box,
but maybe you can find a sale at Academy) - so once you have the empties, if you buy components in bulk - wads, primers, powder, you can reload 28 for about $3.50/box using lead shot......

You already talked me thru reloading the 28ga AA hulls. I have three or four cases of the AA 28ga reloaded now just waiting to be shot again. The Walmart closest to me has started carrying the Federal 28ga ammo cheaper than the Winchester AA. I have not reloaded any of that and usually shoot it in my semi-auto instead of my O/U.

I was just curious about the Herters and if you had reloaded any of it.

No, I have not. When I was reloading 28, it was Win AA or nothing. That said, if I was reloading ONLY for hunting loads where I might want a 7/8 or even a 1oz 28 load, I would opt for federal/Cheddite/Euro hulls because they hold a tad more

Win AA hulls are tapered inside, the Federal hulls are straight sided inside. I know that the 12 and 20 gauge hulls need different wads for the Win and Federal, I assume that the 28 gauge need different wads also. Check the reloading books, or online.

I'll second George P, both on the quality assessment of Herter's shells, and on using AA hulls for loading. (I don't load 28, but I know enough guys that do, and like George, they prefer AA's)

I have shot a case or two of Herters target shells. They are absolutely fine. Got them on special at Cabela’s. Can’t remember the price but was attractive and at the same price, would buy them again. When I shot really high volume competitive sporting clays, it was just about worth it to reload 12 ga target shells. At less than a thousand shells a month, it’s not worth it, and even then...

Don’t know who makes the Herters shells but I would say they are not quite as good as the Fiocchi shells - maybe two reloads. Almost not worth it at all. But at the right price? Happy to shoot them.
