Does anyone here know the rules for hi-cap mags for the MAK-90? Specifically one i am assuming is post-ban, as it has the wooden thumb-hole stock, no threads on the end of the barrel, and ground-off bayonet lug. I have been told that surplus Chinese hi-cap mags are not allowed, and then i hear things about replacing magazine floorplates and such. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

It all depends on what state your in. Most states, there is no problem with using standard ak mags in the Mak-90 (and de-banning your rifle in a normal configuration). In New Jersey, I'm certain (could be wrong), that there is an AWB in place and that you can't use newly produced standard ak mags. you would have to use restricted 10 round mags or find some preban 30 round mags. Some other states may follow this pattern.

The info I had just given you is to my knowledge and could be wrong. I am sure someone with the know-how will correct me or add more to what I told you.

Knowing what state you are in could be helpful in determining what the laws are.

You've got to know what your state laws are, but I'm assuming TN is no issue here. The federal AWB is dead as well, so we can all forget that.

I think what you're regurgitating is 922r gibberish. There are those who believe inserting a magazine into your rifle constitutes "assembling" and invokes the 922r rules about number of imported/domestic parts in an imported non-sporting rifle. There may even be an ATF letter floating around to that effect (beats me), but it don't mean crappola, 922r is not prosecuted/prosecutable against individuals and attaching/detaching a magazine is not assembly until proven in court.

Don't worry about it, and sleep well.

Under federal law it is totally legal to use 30 round magazines in a MAK-90 which has the thumbhole stock. The guns were sold with the thumbhole stock so that they would comply with the 922r rules. Brand new MAK-90s came with chinese mags in the box. The only issue is if you are doing a conversion to pistol grip and don't want to replace the chinese fire control group with a USA one, some people use USA mags to get their 5 USA parts.
