Hiding Scratch in Rem 700 BDL stock

Hey guys,

I've got a 2 year old Remington 700 BDL and while hiking across mountains at deer camp last week I got a couple of unsightly scratches down the side of my otherwise pristine stock. I know I shouldn't worry about them, but I was wondering if anyone knew of some methods on getting them out. The BDL stock is walnut with a very hard clear polyurethane type finish and it seems as if the scratches haven't hit the actual wood. They are long but not at all deep or wide. Is there some way I could rub out the scratches or even fill them with a clear filler? I'm assuming the tough part would be blending the filled scratches with the rest of the high gloss stock. Any info on this would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Automotive rubbing compound should do it, just be careful not to go thru the finish into the wood. Use Johnsons wax when you are done rubbing.

I have a similar problem on the same stock but the scratch just touches the wood. Its about 3-inches long. Any ideas on how to fix without refinishing the whole stock. This was a NIB 1975 gun I scratched on its first hunt :banghead: .

Fill the scratch with Tru-Oil stock finish.
Keep applying & drying several coats until you have built the finish up above the stock finish.

When it completely cures.
Block sand level with 400 & then 600 black wet or dry paper & water.

Finish by rubbing out the dull finish were you sanded with automotive clear coat rubbing compound/wax.
