High Pressure Problem

I had unusual thing happen at range yesterday. I was shooting my Savage I rebarrel 6BR and 223 Remington 700 and some pistols. My second shot with 223 I felt something bad. Powder hit my face I started bleeding a little not much. I looked in pickup mirror blood on nose and cheek looked like a rash of blood specked on my face. Thank God for safety glasses my bad eye was ok. Thought gun blew up but bolt held everything. Gun looks good compared it at home to another 700 I have. Case stuck in gun primer gone but case not separated.
I pulled bullets rest of box all within specs. Used WW 748 powder 24.8 grains 55 grain Vmax bullets. Standard WW small rifle primers. Confirm was 748 powder by checking powder in can looks same.
First round fired ok second was problem bullet did hit target I checked. I tried to load double charge case won’t hold it will only take two grains over max to top of case.
Loaded many years never had this just confused what might caused over pressure problem.
I have used this load past no issues bullets not crammed into lands ,bolt not hard to open or close. What am I missing?

Found issue was piece 222 brass some how got trimmed loaded 223 .

Is you OAL seating the bullet into the lands?

do you check case length/trim case all the time?

Bolt action feed strike on ramp shoving bullet deeper into case. Second shot so perhaps recoil had already move bullet back.
You may never know for sure.

How old is the gunpowder you used?

Too much shoulder bump perhaps. You could measure base to shoulder datum on your remaining rounds.

Trim length good , bullet seating good not in lands. Only have one powder on bench at time. Check loads after first loading primers good. Gunpowder new not old stock. All pass case gage for shoulder bump. All Norma brass. All loads good for Hornady bullets by Hornady manual
Just found bad brass way shorter

Maybe a good statement for checking head stamps.

Your fortunate only the primer blew and the case stayed together.

Had one like that happen to me from a gun show round in a 7.7 arasaka. Scared the crap out of me. My dad felt like total crap for "setting me up". Ended up being machine gun ammunition. This thing we do and enjoy has some big consequences for messing up. That happened before I started hand loading and I think about it as I load for me and my son.

I rechecked everything all well will be even more diligent in future. Thought I was but that one got by. Have loaded for years had couple squibs over the years but never anything like this scary

We all have scary things happen that bring us back to reality. Some of us are not fortunate enough to get a second chance.

A good reminder what can happen in moments of complacency, taking for granted, distractions, even in things we've done a million times before. The worst is if we injured someone else at the range. Glad the OP wasn't seriously injured.

Usually some other guys there just yesterday was alone. That doesn’t happen very often. It’s nice to only have limited members mostly benchrest shooters.

A good reason to stick with the Triple Deuce altogether
