NEW YORK (AP) -- Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will embark on a widely anticipated campaign for the White House Saturday -- a former first lady intent on becoming the nation's first female president.

Clinton was expected to disclose plans to form a presidential exploratory committee on her Web site, according to Democratic officials familiar with the matter.

Clinton's planned announcement, coming days after Sen. Barack Obama shook up the 2008 race with his bid to become the first black to occupy the White House, establishes the most diverse political field. Clinton is considered the front-runner, with Obama and 2004 vice presidential nominee John Edwards top contenders. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who would be the first Hispanic, intends to announce his plans on Sunday.

With millions in the bank, a vast network of supporters and top status in nearly every poll of Democratic contenders, Clinton has launched the most viable effort by a female candidate to capture the White House. She is the first presidential spouse to pursue the office; her husband, Bill, served two terms in the White House from 1993-2001.

The announcement was the latest step in a remarkable political and personal journey for the 59-year-old Clinton -- from Arkansas attorney to first lady to New York senator to front-runner for the Democratic nomination.

A polarizing figure since she burst on the national scene during her husband's first presidential campaign, Clinton engenders strong opinions among voters, who either revere or revile her but rarely are ambivalent.

She often is compared to her husband and found lacking in his natural charisma. Others have criticized her for being overly cautious and calculating when so many voters say they crave authenticity.

Many Democrats, eager to reclaim the White House after eight years of President Bush, fret that she carries too much baggage from her husband's scandal-plagued presidency to win a general election. Among many voters, she is best known for her disastrous attempt in 1993 to overhaul the nation's health care system and for standing by her husband after his marital infidelity.

Clinton's allies counter by citing her strengths -- intelligence, depth of experience, work ethic and immense command of policy detail. Advisers argue those skills, plus her popularity among women and younger voters, position her strongly as both a primary and general election candidate.

In her first run for the Senate from New York in 2000 -- a state where she had never lived and where she was branded a carpetbagger by many -- Clinton won a landslide victory. Through dogged campaigning -- including a "listening tour" of the state's 62 counties -- Clinton was able to convince voters even in the conservative upstate region that she would represent them effectively in Washington.

Does everyone agree she'll push for more gun control? I think she'd definitly bring back a federal AWB.

No matter how your local media may spin her "conversations" with people in NH, the local sentiment, including among Democrats, is pretty much "****".

Not to take away from how awful it would be if she were elected (which I highly doubt), but I think the dems have learned their lesson when it comes to a federal AWB. Doing it state by state gets less national news, less widespread opposition, and less of a fight from the NRA.

Look at MD. I'd bet most gun owners in this state have no idea that an AWB has been proposed for the last 5 years (including this year) and has a good chance of becoming law this year. I'd also be surprised if we get any help from the NRA, as they seem to have written us off as a lost cause.

Good luck Hillary!
It's going to be a helluva Democratic primary.
I think there are far more pressing isues than bringing back the AWB for the Dems.......civil war waging in Iraq and an ever growing deficit back here.

All I can say is.....:barf: :barf: :barf: :cuss:

Bill Richardson is the only dem I would even consider voting for, he's pro 2A, for lower taxes, anti illegal immigration, he's a conservative Democrat. He will be announcing his plans sometime this month. I suspect he will run.

I agree. He seems to be the only viable candidate with a chance of getting to the general election (I'd love it if Ron Paul made it, but I think he has a slightly better chance than Kucinich), and is the first national-level Democrat I've every found palatable enough that I'd actually consider voting for, but I'm still concerned. It's easy to be a pro-gun Democrat in a state like AZ; it's a lot harder to be a pro-gun Dem in the Whitehouse. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't clinton relatively pro-gun when he was gov. of Arkansas?

edited to add: Bill Richardson is supposed to announce his candidacy tomorrow.

I agree. The guy is a STATESMAN who just brokered a peace deal in Darfur!

Yep - running on a socialist platform, and of course with anti-gun anti-military always in the backgorund. God help us - please! - that there are not enough selfish entitelment socialists in this country to get her elected.

I feel like I need to register Democrat to help make sure the lesser of all evils makes the ticket after the primaries.

And Glockfan.45, I much as I hate to say it (that Hillary is less scary a proposition than Obama) I agree with you.

And I quote
``You know, after six years of George Bush, it is time to renew the promise of America. Our basic bargain that no matter who you are or where you live, if you work hard and play by the rules, you can build a good life for yourself and your family,'' Clinton said in a statement headlined ``I'm In.''

I guess I have been playing with the wrong rules by the sound of it.

Liberal Socialist c*nt.... Yea, I said it....

ooh this is exciting. The Democratic primary is going to be a circus of a-holes! Get your peanuts and popcorn ready!

Hitlery Clinton running for premiere...I mean president. Like that was a surprise. The day she moved from Arkansas to New York to carpetbag the Senate seat there it was obvious she was merely manuevering for a shot
at the big prize. She is nothing if not consistent. I expect her campaign to be particularly vicious. She is a true politician to the core and will pull no punches in her quest for power. A truly scary person.

We must not underestimate her, she got a taste for power when good time Billy was in the White House and now she want's more. To the best of my knowledge she is the only former first lady who has sought election to the presidency and perhaps the only one to even hold public office at the national level. This alone makes me suspect her motives. All other first ladies and former first ladies have been content to use the title of first lady to make social statements. Hitlery is not content with that role. She truly makes me worry about the future of America. Her record of supporting anti Bill of Rights legislation both as a Senator and first lady make it crystal clear she is no friend to gun right supporters or any one who supports personal freedom for that matter.

This is made expecially frightening by the fact that Bush (among others) has spent the last two terms doing his best to destroy all faith in the Republican party. Honestly, I'm not sure Hillary would be as bad as Bush (assuming she's not in favor of secret prisons, torture, denial of habeas corpus, &c.), but I'd rather not find out. They both seem to approve of jackbooted thugs, just for different things. :barf:

Hasn't she already been President twice? She's been a hardnose leftie her whole life and now she trying to appear a moderate. I shudder at the thought.

A couple of years ago

GW said (as a joke) it will be Clinton in 08!
Something like "Bush Clinton Bush Clinton"
I am begining(sic) to think it is no joke

Yet compared to many people in politics today, she is a moderate. So many people in America have been draw to the extremes of society because of the "War".

There exists a theory out there which says Families Clinton and Bush have achieve an agreement of Mutually Assured Destruction brought about by the years of governorships of Arkansas and drug shipments and CIA operations and money laundrying and etc. Conspiratorial? Yup!

Frankly, I suspect Joe and Martha Sixpack are tired of anyone from either of the two families. But they keep showing up.
