This should help with the overall availability of Shotgun and Pistol powder.

ADI Powders return to full production

13 January 2015

For those of you affected by the disruption in manufacture of flake powders, it will no doubt come as welcome news that ADI is once again in full production of AS30N, AP50N, AS50N, AP70N and AP100.

It may take a while for us and our distributor to get AP70N to every corner of Australia, so we ask that you continue to be patient if your gunshop does not immediately receive supply. Please be assured that we are producing large volumes of powder, and that any difficulty you may have getting hold of any of our powers at the moment is most likely due to the challenges associated with physically moving powder around Australia.

Thank you for your loyalty to our proudly Australian made products during this period.

So, maybe it'll start showing up in the states by spring, early summer.

That should be some relief to the powder supply.

Wonder why I havent heard of these..Ive just been doing it for a couple yrs I thought I was pretty well versed in powder types/brands. Which of these loads which type calibers? Is it any good? Any of them good for 9mm?

Potatohead, Clays universal is about as versatile and good as unique. Soft shooting too. At 4.5gr or so, it's accurate for me in 9mm

I drove 75 miles 1 way just to get 3lbs.

They're using the domestic australian designation for the powders:

AS30N = Hodgdon Clays
AS50N = Hodgdon International Clays
AP70N = Hodgdon Universal Clays

I use lots of Clays in shotshell reloading. It's about the same speed as Red Dot and works great in target and reduced 12 Ga loads. It's much cleaner burning than Red Dot and Alliant even has their own "version" called Clay Dot. I've never used theirs, but my understanding is that it's almost identical.

International is a little slower and has fewer applications (at least from what I've heard). It's supposed to be good for 12 Ga field loads and most 20 Ga loads.

Universal is still slower and is a really flexible powder with lots of applications in both shotshell and pistol reloading. I wish I could find some. It's supposed to be very similar to Unique in application.

I'm down to my last 2 lbs of Clays so I hope they start showing up soon.

Matt

On another forum, they showed copies of the BOLs showing the stuff is here (40000#) and more were at sean on the way. So, by the time Hodgdon gets it, fills commercial back orders, etc. we should see it about early summer time

Clays was a very popular pistol powder for 9mm, .40s&w, and .45acp in the IDPA world a few years ago. Back before the fire Clays was the most discussed powder for making minor PF on many of the forums. Toss in Sandy Hook, and Clays was all but a distant memory for many of us.

Thanks for the information. It looks like Universal is maybe the one I could be interested in since there are some good load data on the Hodgdon site for 9mm, 40S&W and also 357SIG. Probably something I need to try out when it becomes available again.

Great news!

I was running desperately low on Clays, and had nearly wiped out my supply when it disappeared altogether. Poor planning on my part, but the supply lack (of any pistol powder, it seems) was a major reason why I took the year off of handgun competition and went to rifle instead.

Wanna talk about poor planning? About a week after Sandy hook, I saw an 8 lb jug of Clays at our local Sportsman's Warehouse. I actually grabbed it and put it in my cart, but then changed my mind. I had the money, had it in my hand, but decided to wait until "later." I haven't seen any since, other than a pound here and there in classifieds. Thankfully I stocked up somewhat, but that 8 lbs would have made my life much easier over the last year.

That's the problem with second thoughts.
Been there too...

Hurray,
I have 1lb of Universal Clays left I was saving for a rainy day.
One of my favorite handgun powders. (tied with HP38/231) for #1 in my book.

I use it in 9Mak, 9*19, .light/med .357 and .45

Potatohead
Universal is a lot like Unique. It can't be pushed as hard IMO but it meters well!

Universal is great in 9mm and .40 (never shot .357sig). Meters very consistently and burns very clean, plus good bulk volume for the small auto cases. W231/HP38 is fine, but I can't wait to see Universal on the shelf.
