Tried this on rimfiredcentral but haven't yet got a response...does anyone know what this hole and the flap and screw are on the left side of this Savage 64 takedown receiver? The manual doesn't mention the function of either and the flap and screw aren't pictured or listed on the parts list pages.

Thanks.

This is simply a guess as I have a Savage 64 but it is not the takedown model. My guess is that it is a gas venting hole in case someone assembles the takedown model incorrectly which creates too much headspace and the case head blows.

That's a decent guess for the hole. Boom Boom. And I took another look inside the receiver and the flap secures the ejector in place from the outside. Weird.

That was my first guess. Then after reading your post I decided to find out what a Savage 64 is. It is a rimfire rifle, and from the pictures on this web posting

it looks as though not all Savage 64's have that flap. Savage must have ECP'd the receiver to make it easier to assemble and added that feature later.

I've had a couple and never had those on mine but mine are ten years old or greater. You may be right.
