I have a friend that is planning a home defense project shotgun and is soliciting advice. He wants to build up a semi-auto (already has a slide action combat shotgun) that has readily aftermarket parts such as magazine extension, light mounts, etc. He plans to start with a used gun and has considered Remington 1100/1148 and Winchester 1400. Anything else that he should consider? Since this project is somewhat budgeted, he isn't interested Benelli or any of the big $$$ custom shop guns. He'll appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,
Larry

Having just assited with a similar project (s), this is what we did.

1400s are probably the softest shooting SG on the market, the reliability ain't there. That said one person is using a 1400 in 20 with 00 as a second gun. At somepoint this will be replaced. Leave a 1400 bone stock, Win ammo, Koplin elastic shotshell holder on buttstock.

1148, a lady uses this in 3 gun , helluva shooter. Again stock with a weighted forend for swing, Ammo she reloads is 110% reliable . 1 1/8 oz of #6 [ Duplicating the AA "Superlight" target load. Win 209 pr, 18.5 gr of WSL , WAA12SL wad] runs the gun, uses the Win. X12RS15 1oz slugs. Uses an leather shell holder on buttcuff for HD, adds a shell pouch for runnning and gunning. Yeah, she'll run 50 slugs at one time for practice! Contoured and radiused recoil pad ( toe, heel, inside toward inside).

1100s, fellow tried the 12 lbs of sidesadddle and the whole enchilda of another 'famous' gun maker. Gun wouldn't run with sidesaddle. Fellow figured to sell it and asked to learn to crawl then walk. He had to have the syn stock, he understood and replaced with wood and sold the syn stock. [ 6' 3" and 200# with money and hard -headed tendencies]

Wood stocked with 24" bbl with Hastings choke set up. Leather butt cuff ,2 shot ext, with a 6oz weight on mag cap, radiused toe, heel, inside edge. Gun now fits and shot to shot times are way faster. Larger front bead , mid bead sight, and the rib...it is wider at rear narrows toward front, natural progression for eyes focused on target and in 'subconcious sight" the slugs are easier to hit with. He is now focusing/seeing the target, with gun fit and these little tweaks, he hits what he sees.

Ammo bought with monies re-couped from earlier " expenses". Uses same ammo as the lady aforementioned.

These last two folks are playing the game with shotguns, includes 3 gun. guns double as HD. #6 and slugs used at club. These folks live in rural setting, I suggested the use of slugs for HD. Some may disagree...I happen to like slugs for SD/HD if a setting allows.

Main deal is reliability with ammo 100% of the time, gun fits shooter. Why no light? Ambient lighting and emergency lighting with batteryback up. Don't want to tip location to BG with a light. Now they may toss a little light (s)over there to make BG show himself...so they can go "that way" for cover ;)

Part of the "plan" was we figured it wouldn't be a Fuller brush sales rep.,coming to visit...so numerous rooms ,when being remodled, have 4' from floor -up- various materials in walls to deter bullets, slugs, and buckshot. Shooting alleys with heavy furniture. Simple dump bag hold extra ammo, BUG, spare cellphone ,lights and the like. Both Carry C&L their CCWs

Mobilty and cover with a gun that fits and handles easy . With a plan, and a backup plan and a ...

As it has been said if you know where the rocks are - you too can walk on water. ;)

I've seen and heard of a number of autos being set up for 3 gun. These ranged from Remington Model 11s to Beretta 390s.

If it t'were me, I'd get a used 1100 and go from there.

OTOH, Corriea has been shaking things up with his Saiga. Might be a good second choice.
