I have used black powder substitutes for years, but the do-it-yourself part of me (plus the fact that I have a strong chemistry background) has been looking into making my own black powder.

I am curious if anyone has any properly tested recipes out there. So far all I can find are a few websites and some overpriced books. Seems like the process can't be that hard. Most of the raw chemicals are easily obtained. It seems like based on prices of the raw materials like potassium nitrate, sulfur, and charcoal, it can be very economical as well. I am also really curious about alternative ingredients like sugar, rust, and other things I have heard about over the years. I would really appreciate it if you only include things you have tried and not hearsay.

Oh, and I am sure everyone here would appreciate no lectures on how dangerous this is, unless you have some first hand experience. And please don't list suppliers of chemicals, if you must, do that in a PM. Thanks in advance.
