Hi gentlemen, new to this forum. I have a question on using the hornady AOL. When I insert the case into the chamber, then start to push the bullet in there is resistance, then with more pressure the bullet will go in further into the chamber until it stops. Is it at this point that the bullet is contacting the lands?
What is the resistance being felt at the beginning? You guys have probably answered this before but I can’t seem to get it through my thick head. Thank you

From the OAL gauge manual. It also says "about 4 lbs pressure".

I usually do a new bullet 4 or 5 times until I'm confident I have a good reading. I use several bullets from the batch. Often the bullet will remain in the bore when I remove the tool.

What caliber?

223 rem. Thank you for the drawing, that first part I feel snugness must be the free bore. I was concerned because my COAL compared to factory was .114 bigger, I know that’s not a gauge but just wanted to check, thank you

I too usually take measurements a number of times until I see consistent numbers. Sometimes I measure 4-6 times or more. I may try a different bullet out of the same box just to make sure. Usually the number are +/- .001 or so.

The inital resistance is the throat. The full stop is jam. Depending on ojive shape and throat geometry these measurements will be different for every bullet type. Vld designs will go much deeper.
