This is my friend named Peter. We hunted together in Bucks County, Pennsylvania which is a shotgun slug only zone. He toppled this young doe at a distance of about 50 yards. But what makes the shot noteworthy is that he had to shoot through a very tiny opening in the thick brush. The rifled barrel, scope, and Hornady ammo made for a successful harvest.

Peter removed his orange coat for the photo. That's why he doesn't have appropriate orange coverage for this photo.

Where I hunt in Chenango County NY it recently changed over to rifle country, but myself and many others continue to use shotguns. The knockdown power is so incredible and unless you are hunting over a large field the range is quite satisfactory. I use lightfields myself and have had excellent luck.

Nice. Should be good eating meat. You have to love quick, humane kills on the deer without much suffering. Nothing does that better than a huge bullet or slug/sabot. No offense but I think these guys using the 223s on deer are a joke. Not that the energy is weak, but the bullet is far too small.

We are a shotgun-only county too and just recently opened to handguns. I bought a "hand rifle" in 444 Marlin to use our regs to the greatest - for we need a straight case of any length with minimum of 500ft-lbs. But due to being uncomfortable with the trigger pull I didn't use it this year.

However I did use my 20ga 1300 to take an 8-pointer at about 15 yards shooting those Remington Core Lokt Ultras just two weeks back. Right on through the ribs and out the other side with a massive wound channel and exploded the heart. The lungs looked like they went through a meat grinder. The bleeding from the exit was a lot as well. He ran holding his breath and went down after about 40 feet and quickly blacked out. I love these big mean sabots we get to buy nowadays; they do the job quite well.
