I think I'm gonna send my dad some ammo. He's not quite as much of a stockpiler as I am and I figure it's something he can always use. What do ya think? I was planning a box of each of .357, .38, 12ga, 16ga and some .22.

As for the shotgun shells he's likely going to use it for some pheasants and chuckers. Would #7 seem appropriate for that?

I was considering a nice holster for the model 60 but that's more of a personal choice for him to make.

Ammo seems like a good idea. If he shoots at a range. you may want to add targets too. I can imagine if i opened it up and saw all the ammo i needed to go shooting and targets too. Sounds like an excellent gift.

I've done that before- I gave my dad a bunch of homemade .38 with home-cast bullets for Xmas, I thought it was kind of a nice "arts and crafts" present and he did like it. I'm making another bunch of 9mm for him for Father's Day.

well, I for one would prefer a gun over ammo, because once you shoot the ammo, you had your fun and there is no "evidence" of the present.

a gun on the contrast is something you keep, more durable.
The ammo might be gone in 2 months, but a gun might remind you of the person you got it from 5 or 10 years from now.

Buy that's just a personal preference, and I would prefer ammo over something like socks :)

I saw some nice wooden gun cleaning kits last year near Christmas. Got my two older sons each one. They had brass tubes and green fabric-nice looking. Ammo is a good thing also. Especially with the prices today. wc
