CLEMSON'S AIR RIFLE CLUB TEAM IS NATIONAL CHAMP
CLEMSON - Clemson University's air rifle club team has hit its mark -- the team is the number one collegiate club team in the nation.
Clemson hosted the Southeast sectional air rifle competition during spring semester. After all the scores from sectionals around the nation were compiled by the National Rifle Association, the Clemson team was notified that it was ranked number one, said club adviser and coach John Cummings.
Students who competed on the national team were team captain and club president Lyndsey Hall, a senior graphic communications major from Abbeville; Brian Holland, a senior computer engineering major from North Augusta; John Campbell, a senior electrical engineering major from Central; Benjamin Sears, a senior majoring in human resource development from Aiken; and Christy Mills, a senior sociology major from Blue Ridge.
Hall was ranked the number two shooter in the nation, with Holland ranking third, Sears ranking seventh and Campbell coming in 11th.
"We were really excited to get the news, especially because this was the last year for a lot of people on the team," said Hall. "We've been working hard to get better. And we're more than a team -- we're a big group of friends."
Clemson has hosted the Southeast sectional air rifle competition for more than 10 years. The team ranked second for the past two years and has never ranked lower than seventh in the nation, said Cummings.
