Apparently maks wont be legal to purchase in cali next year. I want to purchase one or two in the best condition possible, from any country where they were made.
Ive tried all the local gunstores and even one or two internet sites. Ive never been in the situation and am at my wits end, just 6 months ago they were plentiful. Does anyone have any advice?

Not sure what you mean. If you check the California Attorney General webiste, the Bulgarian Makarov is certifed until December, 2006.

why are they being banned?

Kali is just as good as the UK. move to a real state...

I believe he is thinking about the new laws in CA starting the First of next year.

After the first, no NEW guns will be added to the list that do not meet the new requirements.

Any guns on the Roster now, will stay legal for sale untill their certification date expires. Also as long as gun manufactures renew their certification before it expires the gun will stay on the legal for sale list. However after Jan 1 2006, if they let their certification expire, then that gun will no longer be sold (new) ever again in Cali.

Example: The Kimber Ult Carry II / Blue Steel, Alum. Alloy Certification expires 1/10/2006. As long as they re-new their certification before 1/10/2006 then it will remain on the list. However if they dont re-new the certification, it can no longer be sold.

Please lets stop the CA bashing and "move" stuff right now. Second, most Turners chains still seem to have Bulgarian Makarovs for $180 or $160 on sale, have not seen a sale in a long time though.

EG and Russian military Maks are on the C&R list too so exempt from some CA laws, as for the new one, I don't know for sure.

If need be, order on and have it shipped to a FFL dealer. Palm Springs area has a few shops, best one I have found was Condor gun shop in Desert Hot Springs. Craig is a cool guy(his son in law pulled out my stuck car from the sand near a local shooting spot!)

Go to Condor and see what they can do.

Go to Slim Tim's Makarov Trader at Gunboards.com
There are plenty of folks there who will sell you a Mak.
Good luck, and enjoy. Maks are fun.

Every Turners I have tried says "we just sold the last one, and dont know if more are coming in". The local gun shops say they cant find any online to transfer for me.
Moonclip, I havent been to condors for a while, Ill stop by coming home from work one of these days. I thought I was the only one who gets stuck out there going shooting. ill check out slim tims as well.

PB, if a gun is on the Curio and Relic list, as East german and Russian military Makarovs are, it is exempt from having to be certified as a "safe" handgun in CA.

Therefore if an E.German Makarov can be located at a dealer out of state or as a dealer sale in state, it would not be a problem to acquire it, except for the high prices E.German Makarovs now command.
