There is a lot of discussion of bulky powders and how it would be easy to overflow the case with a double charge.

Some say to use 6 grains of Unique, others 9.9 of #5. How many grains would it take to fill a case to the top. Im sure someone out there has tried it just for kicks.

BTW, I went to the opening of the crossroads yesterday in Phoenix, bought 5000 LH Winchester primers for $103, and 5000 SR Winchester primers for $103. A deal by todays prices but getting more expensive. I was also looking to get bulk WIN 231, HP38, Unique or #5 and it was sold two hours after opening of the show, the dealers did mention other small dealers there bought most of the stuff.

It would vary considerably by powder.
Almost all of them are different density, and 10 grains of one would be nowhere near the same volume as 10 grains of another.

For instance, the Lee manual shows the case capacity of the .45 ACP as being 1.14 CC.

They show 33 powders as suitable for use with a 230 grain jacketed bullet.

But only 12 of them that are suitable to be used with a .5 or .7 cc dipper.
That tells us that the other 21 powders are too dense to be measured with a dipper, and must be weighed.

As above it depends on what type of powder, if you could get some cordite it would surly overflow in a 45acp.

but from a few years ago...

Brass is fired non-sized; number is water capacity in grains. I was trying to come up with a load for SSR and couldn't find any info on case volume. Measured some others while I was at it.

.380 11.9
9mm 13.8
38 super 16.5
38 TJ 17.3
45 GAP 18.7
.38 SP 24.8
45ACP 27.3
.223 30.2
44 mag 38
50 BMG 294.9

About 12 grains of Unique just about overflowed a .45 case. Any movement by the press caused spillage.
