How many "new" shooters have you taken shooting

I have introduced untold number of people to shooting in my 71 years I tried to take at least one none shooter shooting each year.

Introducing young people to guns and hunting is probably one of the most satisfying things I have done in my life.
One of my most memorable experiences was a about 10 years ago when a co worker asked me to Introduce his
two boys, 11 and 12 to gun safety and shooting. I said I would be glad to, so we made a date for the next Saturday
to go down to my hunting lease where we have a shooting range. I told my friend Mike to have his boys collect a few tin
cans. When we arrived I went trough a gun safety and handling before we got to any shooting once that was done
I had them start with 22's shooting targets until they understood the of the basics and were doing pretty good.
Then we moved to having them shooting the can's, Which they thought was a lot cooler then the targets.
I had brought a number of different guns with me, rifle's, pistol's, shotgun's and two black powder rifle's (One percussion
the other a flintlock) . Throughout the day I had them shoot each type of firearm.
To accentuate the power of each of the gun's I had filled 1 gallon plastic jugs with water dyed red with food coloring,
and let them shoot them with each gun. When we finally quit when it started getting dark.
You are probably saying so what, it sounds like any typical day of shooting. The difference is that. Mike my friend, was
on chemo therapy
, for cancer of the spine. On the following Monday at work he came up to me and thanked me and Told me
" that Saturday was the best father an son day he had ever had" and to make it even more memorable, Mike died the following
Saturday. I am sure you all have stories similar to ours and that is what makes shooting and hunting a great sport.

My two brothers.
My son, daughter and son-in-law.
Two guys I work with. Most fun is going out plinking with my kids and son-in-law.

I started a guy shooting that wanted protection in his home. He bought a new Ruger SP101 DAO snub, I provided Gold Dot Short Barrel .38 ammo and a speedloader. He feels good about his ability to protect himself now.

Four in the past year:
  • Best friend's wife. My wife and I took a pair of handgun intro courses with her and her husband. Result: went from "I hate guns" to "that Ruger LCR is cool - I want one". Success.
  • Friend who is a liberal divorced mother of two now attending college. Her son was using BB guns in scouting, and wanted an idea of what's involved. Result: still thinks guns are only killing tools.
  • Friend from work and his wife. Took to the range after giving them a safety rundown. Result: now is looking to take classes together and purchase a firearm.

at least 6

Its IMPERATIVE, if we want shooting to still be around in a generation that we take new folks to shoot.

This year.......

Took at 60 year old lady.... she has purchased her first gun

Took my wife............ wants to go again

Took friend #1...........he bought a S&W, will soon CCW

Took friend #2........... he has bought THREE pistols since.... just got CCW

Took friend #3........... He bought a Keltec PF9........ waiting to CCW

Took Friend #4.......... She bought a CZ82....... has her CCW

I spent a little time with each.

All it takes is some patience.... people REALLY enjoy it, they just have to give it a chance.

Just one buddy this last year that I met at work, he works in an out of state office of my company. He has been interested and he shares the same political bent as I do. He heard another co-worker and myself talking about hunting and he confided into me about wanting to get a pistol but not knowing where to start. I had him at the range the next night with my spread of pistols for him to try. I paid for everything and explained the different functioning of each. He had a blast and I have a new friend for life. He's since bought a Beretta 9mm and just joined a shooting club.

I've offored to take a neighbor shooting before, any time he wants, once he expressed interest in purchasing a firearm. If the subject ever comes up again I'll plant a seed about the need for home protection to get the ball rolling in his head again. He initially said that he thought it would be good to have something around the house.

Can't even guestimate how many people I have taken out shooting for their first time. My first outing was with an uncle in 1963 at age 11.

But here is a pic of my proudest. My 6 year old grand son.

In the Marines I trained 1400 directly in basic combat. Not sure how many were shooters before. I would guess around 40% haven't handled a firearm. I don't think that counts though.

Last year I took 3.

This year have 1 and my buddies wife and daughter are coming out in a week or so.

Too many to count. I've taken several non-gun-owning friends out to the range, as well as several ladyfriends that have never even held a gun before.

For my non-gun-owning friends, my rule has always been that I'll cover the first range trip. Any additional trips, I'll supply any gun they want, but they bring the ammo. Seems to work out well for the few that enjoy shooting, but aren't at a point where they are ready to own a gun.

I don't have many newbs to my credit but I have taken maybe six new shooters to the range. My grandson(16) and his buddy (15) had some experience with shotgun hunting but had never handled handguns. We started off with a couple hundred rounds of .22lr through the Browning Buckmark. They both did very well. After the .22 came the g-17, then the M&P.40c, then the .357 mod 19-3, and finally the g-36. Only one shooter at a time on the line and I instructed each one to carefully monitor the other to spot any safety violations. They both are becoming quite proficiant and gramps is seriously considering reloading.
My daughter and her boyfriend are anxious to learn but prefer to wait for the weather to warm up.
A waitress friend bought my J-frame 642 from me and got her cpl so she and her husband have gone to the range with me. Another girl at the diner is thinking of getting her cpl too so we should have a nice little group of shooters. I'm one of the regulars (breakfast) at this diner and of twelve I can name right off, there are eight of us who carry everyday. I'd say we're in a pretty safe environment.( that number includes two leos and an occasional homeland security agent).
