THE reference on Smith & Wesson firearms is "The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Jim Supica & Richard Nahas. Current edition is 3rd. You should be able to get a more precise date of manufacture from Smith & Wesson dirctly. Certainly you can get one of their historical letters for a fee to provide as much documentation as they have available.

The above dates include a typo. I bought one in the early 70s and they had been out for years before. I suspect Selko meant from 1963 to 1987. Ed.
