How to date S&W Model 19

I just picked up a Model 19-5 at the gun show today (for cheap) and wondered if anyone can tell me the year of manufacture?

The serial number is AUL90xx

If she looks like she's been rode hard and put up wet, let her go home with someone else.

THE reference on Smith & Wesson firearms is "The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Jim Supica & Richard Nahas. Current edition is 3rd. You should be able to get a more precise date of manufacture from Smith & Wesson dirctly. Certainly you can get one of their historical letters for a fee to provide as much documentation as they have available.

The above dates include a typo. I bought one in the early 70s and they had been out for years before. I suspect Selko meant from 1963 to 1987. Ed.
ps: Ooops... Reread and noticed the serial number. My mistake. I was referring to the Model 19 in general. Ed.
