Hi Gentlemen, not a regular poster but a friend knows I'm computer literate and gun-friendly and asked me to ask "HOW THE *#$@#$ DO I GET THE BOLT/BARREL BACK INTO MY GUN".

Below are his sketches and explanation, I know nothing about it, only that his bolt is sticking out and he needs some help from some WISE and KNOWLEGEABLE people as to how to reassemble it.

I know he bought the shotgun NIB and got to this point while trying to install the barrel as it came in 2 pieces.

Can someone help? :):):)

Thanks, appreciate it.

If he bought it NIB, did he get the owners' manual with it too? Directions for field stripping should be in the manual. RTFM = Read That Fine Manual (before taking things apart)...

All I can think of is that maybe the bolt slide link bar on the back of the bolt has gotten out of its recess in the bolt return spring follower in the back of the receiver. This means that the bolt can't go back until the bar is back in place and can be depressed into the bolt return spring tube that extends into the stock out of the back of the receiver. He might have to pull the trigger plate to get everything back where it belongs.

Thanks for the RE-PLY, the answer is yes, first thing I asked him too, before going through all the trouble of the post (yer all's trouble too).

Said that the FM didn't say how to get it done, will print out your answer and take it to him, otherwise he was going to bring it over to me, I'm kinda mechanically inclined, leastways can get all my firearms apart and back together again... (albeit w/help sometimes).

THANKS FOR YOUR POST Lee, maybe someone else can chime in too, will let y'all know how m'friend comes along, is excited about his NOS purchase.

Peace,

Interesting question. I don't think that the problem is with the link being out of the cup which is on the forward end of the recoil spring. If that were the case, the bolt wouldn't retract at all. From the pics and description, it appears that the bolt is retracting most (if not ALL) of the way. It wouldn't do that if the link weren't in the proper place.

You might check the recoil buffer which is in the rear-most portion of the receiver. It's only about 1/4" thick (estimated) and is known to dry out and become hard and brittle. Since they haven't made these SX-1 guns in the past 30 years, that may be the problem. The recoil buffer may have dried out, become brittle, and is somehow stopping the bolt from retracting all the way back.

Of course, all this assumes that the bolt is properly assembled in the first place and that there is no foreign object inside the bolt which would cause it to fail to completely retract.

Also, IF this is a rotary locking bolt, it may be necessary to slightly juggle the position of the bolt in the receiver in order to fully seat the barrel into the receiver.

thanks PETE, I'll pass along your message to my friend and let y'all know.

SURE DO APPRECIATE THE HELP (coming from him!).

With the bolt locked back and the front half of the bolt sticking out, I'm guessing a broken firing pin spring, broken crosspin or a stray piece of cardboard, buffer or whoknowswhat. Seems strange on a new gun, so I'd like to see it before I make a real guess.

Heck, right now I'd like to see mine, but I'm at work until 6.

It seems to me I had that problem once while I was rebuilding mine - all new springs, buffer, etc. I wish I could remember back that far. I'm running through a mental checklist and drawing blanks on cocked/uncocked, the shell lifter, the release, etc. Nuts. I honestly think it's easier to fix them than to try and think about them and explain it.

Please let us know what you find.

John

Thanks JohnBT for "racking your brains", a lot of effort to think back about stuff, I wish I was so sharp with what I done as compared to what I have in front of me.

If ya think of something, let me know, I printed out all the answers above and took them to my friend, will be playing around with it tonight, and I'll report back.

APPRECIATE YOU KNOWLEDGEABLE guys taking the time to write back, we'll see how he does.

Peace,

OK, Here we go...

If the bolt will move back and forth in its carrier out of the gun like your view 1 and 2 it will do so in the gun.

MAKE SURE THAT THE PIN THAT HOLDS THE TRANSFER BAR IS FLUSH WITH THE SIDE OF THE BOLT. With the bolt forward, drop it face first in the reciever. Push on the rear of the firing pin towards the front of the reciever to make it clear the recoil buffer, then pull back on the transfer bar and wiggle it back and forth until it seats in the reciever. It should move freely in the reciever. I'll keep up with this thread if you have problems.

Howard Roark, thank you for answering.

I'll forward this to my friend and let y'all know how he's coming with his new toy. :)

THANKS AGAIN GENTLEMEN!!! :D:D:D
