how to tell if I have external or internal extractor on Kimber?

just inherited a Kimber custom II and its my first 1911. How do I know if I have an internal or external extractor? Which one does everyone have problems with? What are common symptoms of a bad one?

ummm, if you can SEE it on the outside would be a clue! Look on the right side of the slide, where the ejection port is. External is the bad one. If you have any failures, FTE, brass thrown in weird spots (at your forehead), maybe FTF (not sure) then send it in and they should give you a new slide.

If you see a little springy thing, that's an external

If you don't see one on the outside, it is internal.

The top right is external (Tactical Ultra). All others are internal.
I've had Zero problems with that external extractor and that's more than I can say for 1911 internal extractors over the years.

I had a pro carry 2 , external extractor.

LOTSA jams on ball ammo

I replaced the recoil spring every 800 rounds, per Kimber service

after 2500 rounds a crack developed in front of the trigger guard.

My external-extractor Kimber has never had an extractor-related problem with several thousand rounds down the tube.

The only problems I have had are my own fault - improperly crimped reloads. I had the crimp die set too high. The rounds looked good, though they had a high percentage that failed to chamber properly.

I think he meant external extractors on 1911's, or possibly Kimber 1911's, not all EE's.

My Pro CDP (with external extractor) goes to the range every week. It is my most-fired handgun (excluding my Ruger MkII). It works perfectly with any type of ammo--even my beginner reloads.
