12 Cosponsors signed on to Rep. McCarthy's bill on March 7:

Rep Ackerman, Gary L. [NY-5] - 3/7/2007
Rep Crowley, Joseph [NY-7] - 3/7/2007
Rep Fattah, Chaka [PA-2] - 3/7/2007
Rep Filner, Bob [CA-51] - 3/7/2007
Rep Frank, Barney [MA-4] - 3/7/2007
Rep Jackson-Lee, Sheila [TX-18] - 3/7/2007
Rep Maloney, Carolyn B. [NY-14] - 3/7/2007
Rep Meehan, Martin T. [MA-5] - 3/7/2007
Rep Moran, James P. [VA-8] - 3/7/2007
Rep Schakowsky, Janice D. [IL-9] - 3/7/2007
Rep Schiff, Adam B. [CA-29] - 3/7/2007
Rep Van Hollen, Chris [MD-8] - 3/7/2007

If these are your reps, you probably already know they are worthless but call them and give them an earful (if you belong to their district, otherwise you are wasting your breath).

Other than this, the bill is still going nowhere. It needs assignment to a Subcommittee before it can move anywhere and it has not been assigned one yet. This suggests that the Chairmain (John Conyers) may be keeping a lid on this bill for now...

Currently the House Judiciary Schedule shows no plans to even discuss HR 1022, though this schedule is usually only updated a few days in advance so that can change rapidly.

Just click on the name and it will take you to a page with contact information for that representative. I suggest flooding their offices with faxes in addition to just making phone calls. If you don't want to pay for a long distance call or don't have a fax machine, you can use FAXZERO. Here is a link that will take you to a page of a sample letters that you can alter and use.

Was gonna do the "Co-sponsors by party" but what's the point?

H.R. 1022 was referred to the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security on March 19, 2007; but Thomas was just updated to show the referral. This is the first of many steps it must take to become a bill. However, almost all bills make it to this step and many bills never make it past this step.

Usually a bill is referred to the proper subcommittee almost immediately after introduction and in the past, that is what has happened with this bill. For whatever reason, they sat on it and did not refer it to the subcommittee this session until March 19th (almost a month of limbo).

All in all, things are looking good for this bill to die a quiet death in committee.

Four more representatives (one a non-voting representative from D.C.) has signed on as co-sponsors as of May 8, 2007. Two of these new co-sponsors are on the House Judiciary Committee.

Rep Blumenauer, Earl [OR-3] - 5/8/2007 - Democrat
Rep Nadler, Jerrold [NY-8] - 5/8/2007 - Democrat - House Judiciary Committee member
Rep Norton, Eleanor Holmes [DC] - 5/8/2007 - NON-VOTING - Democrat
Rep Watt, Melvin L. [NC-12] - 5/8/2007 - Democrat - House Judiciary Committee member

This brings the total number of co-sponsors to 46 voting (47 total) with 11 members of the House Judiciary Committee signed on.

Two more Representatives have signed on as of June 6th :

Rep Sires, Albio [NJ-13] - 6/6/2007
Rep Rothman, Steven R. [NJ-9] - 6/6/2007

This brings the total of co-sponsors to 49.

And another Presidential candidate jumps into the fray!

Joseph Biden has just introduced S. 2237 in the Senate. The bill would, among other things, reauthorize the Clinton AWB and close the "gun show loophole."

There's no text of the legislation yet, but Biden issued a press release about it.

O.K. Where do We Stand NOW ?

By My Count 60 ? :what:

ps... I could be wrong ...but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express :)
