An AK is a crude peasant's tool: lousy sights, awkward ergonomics, cheap construction, junky trigger, and indifferent accuracy.
It is also famously reliable, easy to maintain, and possesses adequate power. Plus, mags and ammo are cheap.
It is for the latter reasons that I'm on my fifth AK and have never gone more than a few months without owning one. An AK is like that primered-out '82 Toyota pickup you keep under a tarp in the back yard: You'd never drive it to church, but if you have some job that needs doing that you wouldn't want to scuff up your everyday vehicle for, it's probably up to the task.
