Hello all,
I have been useing some HS-6 for 357 mag and useing mag primers my question is since I am trying to work up some 9mm loads with this powder
should I use a mag primer in the 9mm case with HS-6 aswell.
THANKS

I use standard primers with HS-6 in 9MM. It works well for me. I am loading some 9MM with HS-6 right now as a matter of fact.

If you are asking, "Do I have to buy another type of primer?", then the answer is "No".

If you only have small mag pistol primers, then you can use those on 9mm..... IF you begin all your load testing all over again, beginning slightly below the "Starting Load" and working your way up again very slowly.

You have to recognize that by doing this you are developing your own load data and that a chrono would be very helpful. The published loads for HS-6 would all need to be de-rated by some unknown percentage. Not only would the Starting Load slip downward, but the published Max Load would also be decreased.

I use a standard primer for the 9mm application and it works fine. I just basically just follow the data in this respect.

Standards work fine....I actually got better velocity out of Power Pistol in 9mm if thats what your going for with the HS6. The HS6 ran a little dirty for me, compared to PP, but thats why they sell cleaning kits:D

Normally you only need a standard primer for the 9mm but when loading a hard to ignite ball powder like HS-6 I highly recommend using a magnum primer. Without a magnum primer you will find HS-6 is somewhat dirty, somewhat erratic and the SD and ES number will climb.

Although you can get buy with a standard primer HS-6 is much better behave when used along with a magnum primer. Considering you already have them why not use them?

Thanks for the info guys, I do have both primers I guess I am asking because with the
larger cases a mag primer is recamended in the data sheets with HS-6 due to it being
harder to ignite, seems like both may be used in 9mm I will try the mag primers and start a starting load data and go from there might even try with standard at starting load and compare.

I have never used anything but standard small pistol primers in 9mm Luger. For that matter with light loads i also use them in 357 magnum cases. If you want to ignite charges of W-296 or IMR-4227 then a magnum primer is a necessity in 357 Magnum.

HS-6, and for that matter HS-5 and HS-7, are just as hard to ignite as W296/H110 and are equally deserving of a magnum primer. If you are using a "light load" of HS-6 I would recommend a magnum primer even more than if you were using a load up near the top of the pressure range. HS-6 is erratic when loaded light or anything other than up near the top of the pressure range. A magnum primer aids in a more complete burn when using a light load of HS-6.
