Hello fellow forum members.. :)

I'm looking to make contact with people that are about to start a homestead/self-sufficient lifestyle in the American/Canadian wilderness- wanting to hunt for their food etc!
Does this sound like you or anyone you know? Please get in touch if so – via private message or to [email protected] .

I'm working on a new TV series for Discovery and we're looking for the people taking on this permanent lifestyle as well as experts to give advice.

I look forward to hearing from you..
Best wishes,
Charlotte

My only advice,

make sure it is in the AMERICAN wilderness. Canada has issues with people defending themselves.

i'm not sure exactly what you are looking for... if you are hoping to locate people who want to be off the grid, i don't think you'll find many on the net - defeats the point of being completely off the grid.

if you are looking to locate somebody who buys very little from grocery stores, this might be a good start. my family eats zero store-bought meat (pheasant instead of chicken, venison instead of beef, antelope before anything else because it is great stuff and doesn't 'translate' well into domestic meat, an occasional goose, corn from the garden, etc...) but we do buy some, so we wouldn't be candidates for your show.

however, we don't buy the food because we can't, we prefer food that hasn't been tainted w/ chemicals and hormones... check over at www.24hourcampfire.com and go to the forums - that's where the hard core hunters hang out and where you'll find more candidates for your series. this board has a small hunting population, but we serve best as punching bags for 'regular' gunnies (this is a gun board w/ some hunters, vs a hunting board w/ some gun cranks)...

good luck w/ your research - hope you can make it work because the topic sounds very interesting.

A British show on people, especially hunters, living in the American wilderness. If you want to be portrayed as a crack pot, survivalist, militia man then sign right up.

While you'd find exactly what you're looking for in Alaska, the Arkansas Ozarks have a surprising number of people who procure a sizeable percentage of their food by hunting and gardening.

Repeating My Response from the AK Hunting Forum

Charlotte,

I'm not one of those living the subsistence lifestyle, but as an Alaskan native (now living in Maryland), avid hunter and gun owner I'm a little curious, so will pose a few questions that might help us better understand your intent.....

If the questions seem a little pointed, I will apologize in advance....you see, a similar type of show on Discovery from a few years back has many people down here in the lower 48 thinking that bears are cute cuddly little creatures, and we're mean to hunt them.....even though the star of the show, one Timothy Treadwell, was subsequently killed as a result of crowding the same bears he purported to be trying to protect. And, two bears that would likely still be living without his "protection," were destroyed as a result.

Can you inform us what the objective of the show will be? Are you trying to portray the challenges of the subsistence lifestyle, or will the edited version look like most anyone could go out and do it?

How will hunting and subsistence issues be portrayed? The mainstream media isn't a lover of citizen gun ownership, can you tell us where you stand on this issue and how these types of things will be portrayed on the show? How will you address the issues of life and death that are a normal part of bush existence, but which we try very hard to ignore or sanitize in our everyday city living?

Again, I'm not one of the people living this lifestyle, but my mother lived in a small Eskimo village until her mid twenties, so I have more than a passing interest in the topic. And, I'm hoping that some of your responses to these questions will help those who are living a subsistence lifestyle, decide whether they want to respond or not.

Thanks,

Michael

"...Canada has issues with people defending themselves..." Not exactly, but close. No CCW, but some places here allow you to carry a firearm to defend against big bears, etc. There's no handgun hunting, but trappers can carry a handgun if they trap for a living. I've never felt the need to carry myself. I just don't carry myself like a victim and nobody bothers me.
The biggest difference between Canada's daft laws and daft U.S. laws is that our daft laws are Federal only. No Provincial or municipal laws to comply with. IE. No California type laws. It's the same for everybody.
Charlotte, you'll have to provide far more information than that. Permanent lifestyle? Who's paying for it? Does a pension come with it? Who's providing the homestead? Ever been to North America?
Supernanny, isn't a plus. Nor a selling point.
However, please come by http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/ and ask the same question. Just be prepared to pay for everything involved. With US dollars. And provide real credentials.

Yack!!!

:barf: I hope its not a reality show you are talking about...... There are enough out there. IF IT IS A REALITY SHOW thats too bad....Because one show ends and another begins . More and more and more UHh makes me sick

That was my first reaction - I'd not trust 'em further than I can throw a cheesecake underwater...
