Thanks for any help... me and my wife are beginners and we want to learn to hunt.

can anyone direct me to a good forum or bulliten board for hunting in central california.. not saying that htis board isn't good.

i just noticed that it deosn't move very quick compared to the other forums on the site... i'm just wondering if folks prefer other boards for hunting, or if there is another one that would help me to meet people in my area (SL Obispo county, CA)

When I lived in Morro Bay I met a couple of hunting partners that knew the central coast well at the shooting range on Hwy 1 between Cuesta Com. College and Morro Bay. I really liked the High Power, Service Rifle folks.

The first thing to do is sign up for a NRA Hunter Safety class. You need that to get your license anyway and you will meet lots of quality people in the instructors and plenty of other beginners looking to enjoy the sport.

I grew up in SLO County (Los Osos) and my parents still live there and my in-laws are still in Morro Bay. I did not hunt when I lived there because there was too much good surf to be had. Now that I'm older, there's too much good hunting to be had to worry about surf. Ha ha.

There is national forest land just out the back door on the Cuesta Grade. Get a Los Padres Nat'l Forest map and go stalk some ground sqirrels. That will teach you the acute senses, awareness, and stalking ability you need to attempt larger game.

Many folks in SLO County have great success hunting wild pigs up around Paso Robles and King City. Usually private land is best (go meet some ranchers) but there is the Big Sandy Wildlife area set up by DFG for hunting. Look for it on the web.

I believe there is more National Forest out behind Santa Margarita by Pozo, out around Lopez Lake, and then the whole Big Sur Range up past San Simeon is the Ventana NF. (get a map and stay away from strange encampments of mountain folk.... don't ask me why I know this.)

The recommendation for Jesse's Hunting and Outdoor Forum is a real good one.

From what I hear about the PRK I assumed all the deer there had a member of PETA chained to them.

You might be very surprised about how much public land is open for hunting in Kalifornistan. As result of the price of entry into The United States, (the Federal Goverment got 1/2 half of the land) Kal has more federal public land (BLM & FS)(and state lands) open to hunting than all the public land open to hunting in Texas.
