Hunting with a single shot rifle ...

With single shot rifles you generally aren't getting a second shot. You aim very carefully and wait for perfect shots to present themselves and '''BLAM''', down they go.

Only time I've had second shots with that rifle is when a second animal ran, became confused and started to double back.

There's no way you're getting three shots. Except on something like prairie dogs.

I just stuff them in my coat pocket or pants pocket if no coat needed. not much slower that all the gagits and they never fall out. 45-70 ruger #3 in 45-70.
Yes, sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

I used to use the little watch pocket of my jeans, too. Holds twenty or so, but not all my pants have them. Simple is best, I agree.

I do have a nice leather sling. I like the idea of something on the sling itself.

Until the ammo falls off into a creek, or some mud, or when you don't notice. Most hunting clothes it seems, have shell loops inside a pocket for just those reasons.

But something like this works when you're not wearing a jacket:'

I don't hunt with a single shot rifle, except for my muzzle loaders, but do occasionally hunt with my TC Contender, a single shot pistol in .30-30 Winchester. I carry spare rounds in a rifle butt cuff which I put on my left arm. I can fire, open the action and pull the case out, pull a round off my wrist and load, pretty quickly. It's a good way to do it for pistols, not sure about rifles.

I haven't needed more'n one shot, though. :D

I've been hunting with single shots for MANY years and I concentrate on the FIRST shot, not the second and third!

I do have a couple loose rounds in my pocket, but, "IF" I feel I need some "gadget" to get off a second and third shot, I'm thinking I brought the wrong gun!!

A single shot should sloooow you down, so you don't take iffy shots in the SIRST place! IF, that doesn't sound good to you, then maybe single shots aren't a good match for you?

That's all well and fine on the smaller Cervidae, but 1) responsible hunters plan for the worst case scenario, not the best 2) when you shoot an elk, for example, you keep shooting until it goes down. Unlike white tail and mulies, a well hit elk frequently doesn't set off like a bat out of Hell, so therefore, unless you put it right down with your first shot (and short of a CNS hit, that is unlikely), a follow up shot is both possible and advisable. Furthermore, while I would not choose a single shot for stalking hogs, if I were using one, I'd darn sure want a second shot available. With a Ruger 1/3, a cartridge in the trigger hand is very easy to feed for a follow up shot. With a break action, like an H&R, it is less so, but still feasible.

Of course the obvious solution that NOBODY has yet pointed out is to simply take the time to practice the hand off with your bearer so that you have a smooth transition to the second of your matched pair of rifles.

I don,t hunt with a repeater very often, but when I think I may need a quick second or third shot this is what I carry. stay safe and hunt often my friends.

EXACTLY my thinking!

I didn't carry a single shot when I was brown bear or moose hunting... IF having a loose round in my pocket isn't fast enough, then I'll carry some other gun...

I have hunted single shots before ... Handi-Rifles, Encores, muzzle loaders. Only one of all the deer I've taken over the years required more than a single shot, and the second was a coup de grâce on an already downed animal. But I'll admit that even when hunting with a bolt action with a couple in the magazine, I carry a couple extras in my pocket. Generally it's because I have more than one tag. But contemplating going afield for the first time with a new-to-me Ruger No.1 got me wondering what others do.

Thanks for the feedback!

In my pocket, back when I used a single shot. Or just root around in a surplus store for some type of pouch that goes on a belt to put a couple round in.

I have a couple of Blackhawk cheek rests with ammo pouches that I have used on bolt action rifles to raise my cheek weld and on H&R Handi Rifles primarily to keep ammo handy.[/QUOTE
I love these things. They are great just to put rounds or a loaded detachable mag inside when you come out of the field and unload your rifle- keeps the ammo with the rifle so you can't forget it when you go back out. Also handy to put your hunting license in- I don't carry my wallet in the woods, since there's nothing for sale and I'm not driving.

thankyouverymuch…

Over the years, that single shot has put a huge pile of meat in my freezer!

I shot two deer with it this last fall...

Can’t say I’ve ever seen a right and left brace of deer before. That’s nice shooting indeed!!

Sometimes a double lunged deer forgets the script.
2nd shot not uncommon, and maybe even 3rd.

I grew up hunting with a Ruger #1. LIked side hammer muzzleloaders just fine.
Those all be single shots.
I like semi autos, pumps and bolt rigs too............and never take a hopeful shot.

Shoot, fully expecting a dead deer from that one shot. Sometimes though, it happens differently.
If you shoot well, you shoot well. I don't feel bad checking in my deer with extra holes. It rode to check in.........in my truck.

if you suck then you still suck, single shot or not.
Have seen enough crappy shooters on the ranges that I'm not thinking a single shot makes for some magical change.

I think #1s are neat, and pretty.
They just happen to also be single shots.
No big deal.
Doesn't say anything about the user, except he/she likes a nice rifle.
Never bought into the hype of making some sort of statement....by choosing a single shot.

Extra rounds are like seat belts..........you don't expect to use them, they're just insurance.
You don't control everything.
Last perfect person was nailed to a cross.
Stuff happens. Plan accordingly.

I suppose some folks shoot AT critters.
And try to rely on followup shots.
None of my hunting friends or family think like that.
