Hello friends of THR. Some months back while at my local gun store I found some Smith and Wesson 66-7's on the shelf. All for around $430. Four were 2.5 inch, two were 4 inch. I've always wanted a 66, so I put one on layaway. Fast foward to July when my wife suprises me with a 65-1, pinned and recessed. So by now, I'm not really crazy about the 66-7, with it's internal lock, two piece barrel, etc. That's when I notice Tanfoglio Witness Compact in .45 ACP, so I change my layaway over to it. Then I come home to read on the 'net about how many issues they have, and I can't even find a leather holster maker for it. As of September, I go in to the gun store, and my friendly salesman says "Joe, I have something you may like." He comes out with a beautiful Smith Model 19-4, nickel plated, 2.5 inch. It had Hogue overmolded grips. I immediately snatched it up, and paid the difference that I had left from the Witness Compact. (Let some other sucker have that thing.) When I got it home, it shoots great, it would be 100% condition, except the Hogue grips caused the slightest bit of corrosion where they touched the frame. I put a set of Hogue Kingwood finger grooves on it. I'm so happy with this new jewel, that's what it looks like when I carry it. It shoots great to, both .38 special and .357 magnums. Ps, got it for $408.25 out the door.

I walked into my favorite shop a couple of weeks ago, and the salesman behind the counter looked up and said, "I know what you're looking for."

"You do?" I replied.

"Yep. You're a revolver guy."

Gee. Does it show that much?  :D

The 66-7 was a bad decision.

The Witness was a bad decision

The 19 was a very good decision

Marrying a woman that will surprise you with a pinned and recessed 65 was a GREAT decision

Thanks to all of you, life is good. And I could go on and on about that perfect wife of mine. She told me last night that it is highly possible that the 19 will go into her purse!

In my twenties and newly married I decided to purchase a handgun for my wife. At that time a permit from the local sheriff's office was required. Our long time in office sheriff was a 'no nonsense' type who believed only law enforcement should have handguns. After talking with him for several minutes it was clear I was getting nowhere so asked what had happened to my constitutional rights? At that point he erupted into a tirade saying it wasn't a right but a privilege, I presume in order to tempt me to respond in kind and thereby have a reason to refuse my request. When that didn't work he changed his tactics with some fatherly advice that I've remembered to this day, some 40+ years later.

"Boy, don't you know, never give a woman a gun!!!"

At the time it was all I could do to keep from laughing but after many years I sometimes wonder if that old sheriff may have been giving good advice. ;)

And yes, I did eventually get a permit to buy and therein lies another tale for another day.

Boy, don't you know, never give a woman a gun

My brother married a woman who had shot her former husband with a 22 rifle (he lived).

The first thing he did was get her a J frame (38 Special).

I joked with him at the time that he might be making an error.

Of course the shooting was justified and it was all a joke.

She was a nice lady but to my knowledge, never surprised him with a nice revolver like Slicksleeve's wife did.

You did good! :)

My local shop has one for $495 + tax but it has some handling marks that keep me from even considering it...especially at that price.

I've been watching Gunbroker off and on but haven't found the nickel 2" I would like as a a companion for my mint nickel 19-4.

Thanks for the responses, fellers. These grips are my first wood made by anyone but Smith and Wesson. They feel great in my hands. I have a medium size hand I would say, and the palm swell seems to fit fine. I called Hogue, hoping for Rosewood, and could have gotten them, but they were out of stock and would have had to waited a while. They had these Kingwood in stock, and I'm pleased with them.
