I couldn't get Hodgdon Universal so ....

Hodgdon Universal seems to elude me, I haven't been able to find it. I finally decided to try some Win 231, same story. My source dried up. I did find some Hodgdon HP38. I understand that it is the same as Win231. I sure hope thats right .... I bought eight pounds of it. It'll Be here tomorrow.

Looks like I'll be loading a bunch of it. I see HP38 is listed frequently in most manuals.

I'll be using it for my 40 S&W mostly. Possibly 9mm and .38 Special.

IMO there is no better powder for the .38 Special than HP-38/W231. It is just as well suited for the .45 Auto and I use it the most in the 9mm especially with lead bullets.

I have not loaded for the 40 S&W but from what I hear HP-38 will also work just fine in the 40. If I had to pick just one powder for loading handgun ammo it would be W231/HP-38. (yes, they are exactly the same powders verified by Hodgdon and St. Mark's Powder)

You'll like HP-38/W231.

I load 40S&W with W231/HP-38 along with 380Auto, 38Spl, 9mm, 45ACP and 45 Colt. It meters well, produces accurate lower pressure target loads and burns relatively clean.

And Hodgdon even has plated load data for 40S&W in 155/165/180 gr bullet weights ("BERB" for Berry's bullets) - http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

With 180 gr jacketed/plated/lead bullets and start-to-mid range load data, it will produce accurate target loads with mild/moderate recoil.

My reference target load is 165 gr Montana Gold JHP with 5.0 gr of W231/HP-38.

HP-38/W231 is the only non magnum pistol powder I use besides Universal. It's extremely versatile and I haven't a cartridge I couldn't load with it. That being said, expect unburnt powder at the lower end. It's nothing major but does happen.
