Between black coffee, and shiftn' gears
The sixteen year old lady was really proud of her new 1100 in 20 ga, with a fixed improved cylinder barrel.

It was like her mom's, just this Sweet Sixteen gift had been fitted to her and she was shooting skeet really well with it.
With the school year over and summer time, she was going break shooting in the 80's, she knew she could, just she needed to shoot more.

She remembered her first 25 straight shot with her mom's gun at age 15, and she still had pieces of that hat everyone shot...
Folks got tickled when she stole her daddy's hat to be shot, when she shot her first 50 straight.

"That is my hat, they are supposed to shoot yours!" - her daddy had hollered out having fun with all the razzing
"Yeah but your hat is ugly and we all decided to shoot your ugly hat instead" - all the other folks chimed in with daddy's little girl just laughing, and her momma being chased by daddy to get his hat back...

Just quality time at the range, with family and like kind is all....

Responsible young lady, she did well in school, and did not run with the bad crowd.
So when a member of the family was in the hospital in the bigger city, and her parents really needed to spent a few days and nights away , this daughter could handle the house just fine.

She had been raised right, practiced lessons on what to do, and had been through some real life situations.
Some neighbors were going to keep tabs, heck these were more family than neighbors anyway.

---

The Chain Gang was out doing some repairs the county needed doing.
Deputies on horses, with lever actions in 30-30's and some pump shotguns.

Corrections Facility and Sheriff had let folks know the Gang would be out and about, and everyone appreciated the heads up.
Then again most folks just grew up paying attention, and knowing what to do if a situation come up.
Situations had happened before, and folks still practiced lessons to keep skill sets up, and to pass onto to others...

Next day, the Chain Gang would be moving on down to where some houses were...

--

Daughter has spoken on the phone with her parents, got the latest on the sick kinfolks and other things parents and kids communicate about.

Without having to be told, she was doing some house cleaning, and all.
The dawg was out back working on his sun tan, when he was not trying to be pitiful and talk that daughter into more treats, or get in the way in the house...

"Don't you dare mess up them bed linens I hung on the clothesline, I'll eat up your treats". Daughter had said.

Nothing smells so good and feel so nice as sun dried bed linens...

--
It was hot, and the Chain Gang stopped for lunch and took shade.
Head count was done and two were missing...

--
Daughter heard a noise in the work shed out back while gathering the linens...she was cool...and eased into the house.
One inside she grabbed her 1100 and racked the #3 buckshot into the chamber and fed another into the mag.

"Hi you good looking thing you, we borrowed some tools in the shed and we sure would like to borrow you for some fun, money, your daddy's clothes and keys to that truck out back "

"I don't think so! Now hit the floor and don't you dare move! " Daughter yelled at the two men in jump suits...
These two went for the kitchen door and one snagged a knife from the knife block...
Daughter snagged the wall phone in the kitchen, dialed "O" for Operator,
"Get the Sheriff here NOW! I got convicts !"
she yelled into the phone receiver sitting on the kitchen counter while that
26" barreled 1100 was ready for use...

She could see them out the window, and just as she tried to hit the lock, one rushed up with the knife with evil voice and what evil fun he had planned...."
BOOM! went the 1100!

The dawg had come a running after having been down the property messing around...
A Neighbor heard the shot and tried to call the Daughter, but the line was busy, so the Sheriff's was called...
Radio call went out and a Deputy on horseback was hell bent for leather going to Daughter's house...
State Boy heard the call and hit the lights and made a beeline for blacktop...

Daughter survived, Help arrived and the jump suits were taken care of.

She broke shooting 80's that summer, in fact she shot a 100/100 in skeet.

Skills sets, practiced plans, mindset, and a best kept secret, a 20 bore semi-auto shotgun.

She still had the gun, the mindset, skill sets, and practiced plans are still done, and that day she will never forget, even though it happened a long time ago...

Thanks for another Important Life Lesson, Steve.

Everyone should know how to protect themselves....You just never know when it will be "Vigoro Strikes Mixmaster" time.

p.s. Would have loved to have seen the look on said miscreants face when that column of small lead alloy balls was coming his way...

Nice story. We used to use lever action 30-30s, gave them up for AR15s. Still don't know if that was a good trade.
Scary thing is some inmates will walk away from work crews, and lazy staff may not do continous counts, and not catch it. I knew one who walked away in Douglas a few years ago, only to turn himself in to our supermax facility in Florence a week later. Saved our gas taking him there.
Glad to hear this young lady was OK. I have often considered a 20ga for my loving wife.
