I just saw the Sears commercial with Bart* Farve, trying to decide on a TV. I feel his pain (I just finished watching Field of Dreams, too.)

I'm at a crossroads, trying to decide between two pistols.
#1 - Ruger Super Single Six - blued 6 1/2 bbl with .22LR and .22Mag cylinders. Local pawn shop has one looks almost NIB for $300. By comparison, Buds has two used ones for $50 more, neither with both cylinders.

#2 - Still hunting a used XD; either the 3" 9mm or the 4" .45ACP Compact. NIB is $470 at Buds, so I figure I might get down to the $400-425 mark if/when I find it.

I have a .22 Buckmark and a CZ85 9mm and two 1911s in .45ACP, so either way I go, I'm doubling-up in a caliber. It's just a new platform.

The Ruger would be a range toy and squirrel/rabbit gun if I ever get the promised invitation.:( The Springer would be both range and carry.

I'm leaning toward the Ruger right now. Whatcha think? Ruger now vs. save & wait for an XD (used or new)?

The Ruger Single Six really won't do anything the Browning .22 won't do, unless you have an unusual need for .22 magnum power from a handgun. For range or rabbit, the Browning will do just fine.

Personally, I think a better route would be to expand your calibers by going for an XD or M&P in either 9mm or .40. That would give you more flexibility in ammo, being able to use whatever you happen to find on the shelf.

Around here, both .22 and .45 acp were hard to find. 9mm and .40, much easier, allowing you to GO to the range to practice !

I stopped by to figure out who Bart Favre is, I thought I was missing something.

I was going to say get the Ruger until I saw that you have a Buckmark. I would go ahead and get the XD, one 22 pistol is enough... for now.
 
Single-Six is an all time favorite of mine. You're already covered for defensive guns, I'd say the Single-Six or a good woods gun like a .357 or a .44.
 
Had the MP9, didn't care for it much. Need to try the XD, either in 9 or .45 before I buy.

Ultimately, it depends what you really want the gun for. If all you do is duplicate capabilities, then, A) it doesn't matter what you get and B) Why get it?

Me, I'd want to make my handgun battery versatile first. (This presumes that the handguns listed are all you presently own)

I misread your CZ 85 and thought it was the 83 in .380. Since you already have a 9mm, I'd look at other calibers that you don't have, (and need) or guns in configurations you don't have (and need) The 3" compact XD would fit that description.

To my way of thinking, every "well-rounded" handgun battery should have at least one: .22, .38 snubby, a 4" .357, a hicap 9mm, a hicap .40, a .44 magnum and a .45 auto. After that, it's time to fill in the cracks, like a compact 9mm or .40 or .45, etc.

Many makes and models can be found to create this minimum "well-rounded" handgun battery.
 
Since he pronounces his last name Far-ve, (but spells it Favre), shouldn't we be calling him Bert, (spelled Bret)? :D

Get the Ruger, wait for the ammo situation to get back to normal before buying another .45...unless you have a great stash of it.

So far, sounds like the Ruger is ahead.

I have most of the stable David E described, so in many ways this will double-up something else either way I go.

If I can find a good, used XD compact .45 or subcompact 9mm (preferred), I would be happy. Unfortunately, it seems folks are quite proud of them. Buds has 'em new for $470 (Ballpark) but used prices are commanding $500+.

I'll buck the trend. Get the XD45 Compact! I carry mine daily and have about 7k rounds through it without a single malfunction. It's a fantastic weapon. As you know it would be really difficult to loose money on one if for some reason it didn't "click" with you. You don't see them for sale used much do you? Strange, I wonder why that is? :rolleyes:

Well...since you said that...just to make things a whole lot more interesting, what about a 6.5" .41 Magnum Blackhawk? It's a whole new ballgame for me. I've got 9mm, .357, .38, and .45ACP covered in my current stable. The .41 would open up a whole new ballgame of power for feral hogs, silhouettes, and "wow" factor at the range. Definitely not highly concealable, but high on the chuckle factor. The one I shot last year was fun - a big step up from the .357 Magnum, but the blast wasn't as bad. The guy was shooting his mid-range reloads and let me try a few. Authoratative without obnoxious behavior.

Best part is it's in the price range of the Single Six - $25 more! And, since I reload (I would have to get the dies & components), it would be "economical" to shoot!

So...XD9sc (used are hard to find; best price new is @ $460), Single Six (could happen anytime if it's still in the cabinet at the shop), or the Blackhawk (ditto).

If you are a handloader, you will love the .41. It is a very versatile caliber. If you are not a handloader, the .41 is probably not the best choice...and that's putting it mildly. :) Same goes for the 45LC, 10mm, 44 Mag, and others.

Let me put it another way. No matter what you buy, own, or shoot regularly...if you are not a handloader, it's time to think about becoming one. :)

That's one of the better commercials I've seen. The Viking long boat on the TV screen was too funny.

Ya' gotta have a good rimfire revolver or two. Get the Ruger (or save up and get the Freedom Arms .22lr/mag convertable).

My Buckmark and Trailside are the reasons I still don't have a Ruger .22, despite their being fine guns. I just don't "need" one, so money gets spent elsewhere.

I have an XDSC in .40 with a 9MM conversion barrel. Great little gun. I have shot an M&P in .45, as well as cleaned it for my buddy, and I much prefer the XD line. I really like the platform. Very simple to break down, accurate, dependable, great sights, easy to shoot well. Lots of aftermarket support as well.
