Hello friends shooters, I have a problem and I'll submit it and hope someone can help me. I reload .38 special with progressive press, i have RCBS Little Dandy as the powder measure.
For 100 rounds I put in the center of the target ( B-27), there are two that I hit in the area of 8 in the middle of the target because the round looks like lack of strength .....
I thought maybe my powder measure was missing but I checked more than 10 rounds with a scale and it is not the problem.
I also thought that perhaps there was a grain of media (corncob) and it distorts the charge, I do not know what to think.
If you think of some solutions please let me know. I use "" UNIQUE "" powder with a charge of 3.2

Thank you

Alca

yes i considered human error, the range is 25 yards, so, i'm always in the area of ten and x . After i shot the ** bad ** round, i heard a sound told me to myself, a "" weak "" round... just by the sound it's like it miss powder but it's not the powder than i verified with a scale, i'm really confuse....

I use unique as well for most of my pistol reloads. It seems to be a bit finicky for me as I will get inconsistent charges in some of my powder measures. What powder measure do you use? Did you notice any unburnt powder? It could possibly even be a "weak" primer.

That is your problem right there.

3.2 Unique is not even a Starting load with most bullet weights.

The bullets are barely getting out of the barrel.
You are risking a stuck bullet.

Since you didn't say what bullet weight or type you are loading, I can't offer a load.

But I can assure you the one you are using now is way too light for Unique.

First off weighing finished rounds is not the way to tell if you are getting a full charge each time you drop the propellant because the normal weight variations of the brass and bullet combo alone can be much more than the total propellant charge you are using. I think that the weak report you describe is indeed an indicator of a small or no charge and the missing propellant is going into a different case after that one and causing dangerous overloads at the same time. Trying a different propellant that meters better might help but will not totally solve the problem. After each weak report you should first check the barrel for a squib before shooting the firearm again an need to do this every time it happens. When reloading on a progressive press you should get a bright light of some kind that can be aimed into the charged case so you can actually verify that the correct charge has been dropped with your own eyes and do it every time before seating a bullet. This problem happening is precisely why I do not use a progressive press. I will use the batch method with a loading block/single stage press and it is readily seen when a case is not filled the same as all the others. This has done well for me through a lot of years with no troubles at all. The most important part is to be able to verify that a correct amount of propellant HAS been dropped in the casing before seating the bullet EVERY TIME to make safe and repeatably accurate ammo no matter what press you are using.

RC is correct in that you have a light load to begin with and that will also produce erratic pressures when shooting it.

thank guys for your help, i using 148 gr lead HBWC, i always use these charge (15 years) and never had problem before about 3 weeks.....
I doing the same things.....
Once again, thank you for helping me

Here the chart than i use like a guide

3.2 gr Unique 775 fps 1.18" Fed 100 Alliant
Suggested starting load: 2.9 gr

Pressure: 14,100

3.3 gr Unique 815 fps 1.18" Fed 100 Alliant
Suggested starting load: 3.0 gr

Pressure: 15,300

For 7-15 yards my charge is 2.9 of unique and it work good,
that why is the sense of my question, why that happen....
Does the primers are reliable? i mean, is it possible that is my trouble? Never had problem with primers indeed....
