I need your help on a model 64

I have a model 64 2inch snub. I have been going back and forth on if I want to to take it to a smith and have the hammer bobbed make it a DAO. It is a very nice shooter as is right now and in very good condition with nice wood grips. When the wife gets home I will post a picture of it as it is now.

What do you think do it or not?

Round butt or square? I had a 3" m13 .357 w/ a bobbed hammer. I hate I sold it. Bob it and put on a good set of Secret Service grips. I love those 64s!

If the picture showed it hammer down, I would be able to give you better input. I bobbed the hammer on a Taurus .38 Sp I gave to my son for his 13th birthday so that he would not be able to shoot it single action. I believe anything you are going to carry should be DAO. (My son and I frequently out to the desert hiking and camping and I wanted him to carry something he could handle)

Get a spare hammer from Brownells and then cut it. Swap out the DA fly and I'll bet the new hammer drops right in and works fine. Remember, though, that the hammer and trigger are flash chromed. Whatever part you cut off will be much more likely to rust.

Leave the poor thing alone. It's just right as-is.

Someday, you may want to thumb-cock it so hit something small, like a snake's head or a rabbit at 25 yards.

I believe you can buy a pre-bobbed hammer from here:

Switch in the bobbed hammer and see how you like it (or not as the case may be). This way you can always go back if you what to.

As a rule of thumb, I often bob hammer spurs on revolvers that will, or might be pocket carried. Otherwise the hammer stays as it is, although it's a good idea to use a holster that covers the hammer spur so that it won't abrade covering clothing.

Thanks Old Fluff. Ya know I guess if your so indecisive about something you should just probably leave it alone huh. Here is a picture with the hammer down and about 20 minutes worth of polishing with mothers mag polish. And a little of Johnsons Paste Wax on the wood.

Anyway, there isn't any reason you shouldn't experiment with a bobbed hammer, as long as you can go back if you find that you don't like it.

One other thing. If you do go to a bobbed hammer, pick your hoster(s) first. Some require the hammer to be unaltered or the safety strap won't work. Retension of the gun can be critical when it's a snubby.

As far as aesthetics, I think a snubbie looks great either DAO or not. As far as function, though, there's a lot to be said for rendering a defense-only revolver DAO . Here's a great article on the subject:

Well its bobbed

I ordered a bobbed trigger from brownells to keep my original just in case I want to go back. Had my gunsmith install it and smooth out the trigger WOW what a difference, at least to me. It helps that I like the new look and it functions just as good as it did before.

My 2" 64 is one of my favorite revolvers. I've been meaning to do exactly what you've done but haven't gotten around to it. Congrats!

Another voice here saying it is best to find a bobbed hammer, so the original can be kept as-is.

To bob..or not to bob...that is the question.

Why not just do a mini-bob or a partial?
Trim and radius to the mid way point of the checker.

I carry a revolver off duty, or maybe three.

ALL of my revolvers that are intended for self defensive use are rendered DAO and have "bobbed" hammers. I find they are less prone to snagging on the covering garment. Like Grant Cunningham said, the D.A. Trigger can be made much better w/o the S.A. capability on a S&W and last but certainly not least, it helps to eliminate a very real legal liability.

My SASS guns are S.A. obviously and my hunting revolvers retain their S.A. capability, but I find myself even hunting in D.A. Mode most often because I shoot Double Action more often and I'm comfortable with it out to 100 Yards with a good scope.

BTW, your gun looks great with the "bobbed' hammer.

You can get the grips on the S & W website, this is a model 19 I put them on.
