Friday evening as I was looking my place over for an errant bull (dang it!), I saw a heard (herd, ok?) of sixteen whitetails crossing an open grass pasture. Most of them paused out of curiosity to look me over from about 200 yds.

I love the country.

Now hold on... did you see or "heard" them? :D

No, seriously, I live out in the country too. You can't believe how good it feels to see a few deer walk through the property or hear a turkey out in the back 40. I have a small pond too with some catfish and bass in it; if I get stressed out, I go fishing.

Oh yeah, and that part about going out the back door when I want to do a little shooting....

Seeing critters makes life worthwhile...

I have blue quail and whitewing doves around as my "welfare babies", with the occasional coyote or fox wandering through the yard. The antelope squirrels and the rock squirrels are a hoot to watch, as well.

And seeing great big paddy-paw tracks around the pasture is neat.

And a bench rest on the front porch makes load development just really, really easy.

Speaking of which...

BTW, if anybody wonders why 2/3's of the Texas Highways covers come from the Big Bend area, just come visit Art. You'll understand. There's lots more pictures left to take.

heck, I live 15 minutes from downtown Austin, and we get the deer herds right in the subdivision. We also get turkeys and just recently our local wood ducks and quail started showing up again. Best of both worlds with the nice city nearby and the wildlife in the backyard (although I could do with less deer, they keep getting stuck in or on our fence. . .darn shame).

as much as I see them, I'm still amazed every time I go for a run and see those turkeys walking around.

Hate to tell you guys, but Texas ain't got a corner on beautiful country... Went for a hike today, looking for antler sheds. Saw a hundred head of muleys, the Uinta Mountains, and miles of the great lonesome - just for me.

I share the sentiment guys!
