EXCLUSIVE!

California Governor
Gray Davis (D)
POLITICAL EARTHQUAKE IN CALIFORNIA –
DAVIS RECALL GAINS MOMENTUM
Filed: Monday, February 24th - 6:02 AM

(SACRAMENTO) – When Gray Davis won a closer-than-expected race in last November’s election, most political observers thought he had weathered the storm of allegations of corruption, campaign finance scandals and an electorate that had found his management skills in his first term in office less than stellar.

But now Davis is facing a formidable effort to recall him, led by the Recall Gray Davis Committee (website) that has political observers around the nation buzzing.

The problems for Davis began several days after winning re-election. He stunned Californians by announcing that the state budget deficit was $34.6 billion – the largest budget deficit of any state in our nation’s history. Gray Davis had just spent the entire 2002 campaign insisting that things were just fine in the state and that those who claimed otherwise were lying, in an effort to scare voters from supporting his re-election bid.

Now that Davis has been caught blatantly misleading voters yet again, and with such devastatingly serious consequences, the public has gone from disappointment with Gray Davis to being outright furious.

It hasn’t helped that Davis has proposed unpopular solutions to the mess he made. A tax on the Internet and proposed cuts to vital services has created a sharp backlash with voters.

That’s the anger that prompted individuals from across the political spectrum to ponder a recall effort against Davis, which has exploded in popularity.

1,000,000+ Hits Can’t Be Wrong

The signs of success in the recall effort are indisputable. Democrat operatives have reportedly been pressuring the Democrat Secretary of State, Kevin Shelley, to stall the recall effort.

And with good reason.

The Recall Gray Davis Committee launched their www.RecallGrayDavis.com website just two weeks ago. According to the recall committee chairman, former State Assemblyman Howard Kaloogian, the response has been astounding.

Howard Kaloogian

“We’ve seen over 1,000,000 hits to our website in just two weeks. Already we’ve signed up tens of thousands of Californians who have agreed to circulate petitions, make a financial contribution or both,†Kaloogian proudly explained.

What is perhaps most significant is that it is not just Republicans or conservatives who have joined Kaloogian’s effort. While they are the most intense “Davis-haters,†Republicans have been joined by unlikely partners in an alliance to topple a Governor whose mismanagement and corruption has caused pain and suffering among many.

It’s a Multi-Party Effort and Everyone’s Invited

This past week Kaloogian announced that he had lined up support for the recall effort from some unlikely sources. Kaloogian has established the Recall Gray Davis Democrat Party Steering Committee and the Recall Gray Davis Green Party Steering Committee – both of which are comprised of those disenchanted with Davis and whose ideologies hue to the left.

Amongst Democrat Steering Committee members are several elected officials who demonstrated unheard of courage in standing up to call for the Governor’s ouster.

In addition, the Libertarian Party of California and the California Independent Party have both officially endorsed the recall effort.

“Gray Davis and his political hacks have tried to say that this is just a Republican sour grapes exercise. But he must believe his own spin,†Kaloogian says pugnaciously. He points out that Governor Davis lied not just to Republicans but to all voters when he covered up the fiscal mess the state was in.

“If you allow a politician to destroy a state and then cover up the evidence then you set the standard that it is acceptable for future leaders to do the same,†Kaloogian warns. “The recall is the only recourse the people have to hold their elected leaders accountable when they find out they have been lied to and deceived for the purpose of defrauding the electoral process.â€

History in the Making

So can Kaloogian and his brave troops muster the signatures needed to even qualify a recall election for the ballot? If successful, this would be the first recall effort of a statewide officeholder to qualify for the ballot in California history.

For that to happen, The Recall Gray Davis Committee and its supporters must collect approximately 898,000 valid signatures. That might seem like a steep task – but it actually represents only 6% of the number of registered voters in the state.

And according to recent Democrat-oriented trade and labor union polls, Davis' unfavorable ratings stand at 74% - unheard of for a sitting Governor of any party in America.

But Kaloogian knows that Davis will spend millions of dollars to defeat the recall effort. In the last election Davis spent $10 million to take out Republican Mayor, Richard Riordan, in the primary and spent $65 million to smear the reputation of Bill Simon in the general election.

“We need two things to happen if we are to be successful: we need a ton of volunteers to agree to circulate recall petitions, and we need supporters from around the nation to contribute as generously as possible so we can hold our own in advertising against Gray Davis.â€

And those are two goals that Howard Kaloogian hopes to see realized, not just for the benefit of the recall effort, but for the benefit of all Californians.
