I think I'm being tempted.

To push .359 heavy cast bullets to artillery speeds? To push jacketed .358 pistol-weight bullets into low earth orbit?

Personally, I find the premium bullet options in .358 kind of expensive, but I'm a cheapskate. At least it's cheaper that .375 (but not much)!

Edit: full disclaimer: I own a Marlin in 35 Remington for the reasons above.

Well I do have a bunch of jacketed pistol bullets and coyotes...

For the second time in about a year, I have seen a 35 Whelen single shot at the gun store.
I have wanted one since I was a kid, but have absolutely no reason for it.
Just buy it, the whelen will never let go of you... I finally got one a little while ago as a Savage rebarrel for my old 110 30-06. Resistance is futile, you don't need a reason to want one...

If this is a cry for help, you’ve come to the wrong place :D

Exactly,,, “Enablers Anonymous” we ain’t!

In all seriousness, I think the “want” factor is fat, far stronger and more satisfying to your psyche when sated than the “need” factor is.

I have one gun I “needed”. I have a safe full of guns I “wanted.” :)

Stay safe!

If I had a nickel for every time I've been tempted to buy a gun I "have absolutely no reason for," I'd have a lot of nickels. But I've never been all that good at resisting gun temptations. So I don't have a lot of nickels!:D
Buy the Whelen. You'll never regret it. If I might ask, what brand of single-shot is it?

I’d buy it. I owned one in a Remington 20 years plus ago. Got stupid and sold it. To get another one I went with a TC pro hunter and ordered a barrel for it. I’ve got to get up a mold I like and start casting for it. The 35 whelen is a heck of a cartridge.

"Wanted one since a kid" is good enough reason. If you had the means, wouldn't you get a 1921 Thompson? No one has a need for it but I bet nearly everyone here "wants" one. Myself included.

I was lucky to inherit a large number of guns but I still buy more because I want to.

You dont need a roof when it isn't raining...
You dont need a TV, or a couch, or shoes...

I put together a 357max single shot carbine to scratch that "35 cal, cheap shooting, medium range, single shot thumper" itch. If 35 Whelen was deer legal in ohio, I'd have gone that route. But I was able to justify it as a back up deer rig at least this way.

My brother's auto-ordinance scratched that itch.
Sadly I have more fun shooting a Tech-9. It did take 15 hours of tweaking the mag to get it to run well, but it's a blast now and surprisingly accurate.

I have a wife that says if you want it, get it. It makes it hard to say no to myself.
It's just an H&R. Synthetic stock and all. If it was a Ruger #1 or a bolt action, I would have picked it up immediately.

.35 cal has a cool factor. I don't own a .35 Whelen, but my 673 in .350 mag is a permanent resident here. I'm perpetually on the lookout for a Model 8 in .35 Rem at a price that doesn't make me choke.

H&R Handi rifles are a pretty good value.

I agree with that, excepting that my experience has shown handloading with only neck sizing is necessary to see good accuracy due to the action. My .22 Hornet could not put down sub-MOA groups with factory loads or full length sized reloads, period. With neck sizing, it does.

My 223 nef was like that until I shimmed the action. It still hates factory ammo. But eats my reloads just fine.
