I bought some 2X2 to make a new folding target frame and wanted some input on the fine details from you guys- like what kind of hardware you might have found exceptional to lock the legs (I'm using wing nuts now and they work so-so) and what dimensions might work best- for the latter I am considering making it to perfectly fit an average pizza box because finding cardboard to fit the frame and staple targets to can be a bit of a hassle on short notice. I figure that I'll always be able to get a few pizza boxes and they work OK to staple targets to.

I have to keep within certain dimensions for the range but there is a little room for customization. It has to be a folding design and I find with the wing nuts the legs sometimes collapse at inopportune times. I was thinking of a couple of door latches/bolts to lock the legs.

I know this is a simple matter of nailing or screwing a few 2X2's together but thought I might be missing a good tip if I didn't ask.

Any ideas or plans would be appreciated.

I made one out of 2"x2" with just a slotted base board the cardboard can be tightly wedged into.
Legs folding are screwed to the base and unfold one to the front and one to the back.

It is not so hot on windy days.

My favorite portable stand now is simply a heavy wire frame real estate ground sign i found alongside the road last year. I cut a sheet of cardboard the same size as the old real estate sign and tied it on with zip-ties.

Now, I get to the range, stick the legs in the ground, and shoot.
Stores flat cause it is flat, and the wind can't blow it around, or over.

I normally use for sale signs as well. Around elections I pick up a trunk full of political signs that idiots put where they shouldn't be - like blocking your view at an intersection.

Iprefer pvc but I have made one with a couple of 2x4s seperated by 1 inch strapping with gaps for 1x2 staping uprights. it doesn't fold it comes apart

I did a combination of RC and RWilsons.
I use a caldwell target stand (like RC's real estate sign). Alot of ranges in my area have really hard or rocky ground and i can never seem to get the legs to penetrate the ground. So i built a PVC stand that the legs of the real estate type stand fit in. I never have to worry about it not sticking in the ground, and it brings the target area up to about center mass height.

We can't use any type of metal stand at our range.

I was thinking that I might be able to use metal on the bottom of the legs to help stick into the ground but otherwise no-go.
