ArchAngelCD, in case it's worth a notation in your book or records, I just noticed that the grips on this gun are stamped August, 1983. Thanks again.
Thank you for reinforcing my data. I didn't know they were still dating and matching the grips to revolvers as late as 83. I will make a note of it.

Here's one for you.
.44 special N frame
6 shot
Fixed sights
SN 161xx
Barrel has been cut to 4" and the sight moved back. You can tell that the markings aren't centered on the barrel.

If I'm reading the information correctly your revolver is a .44 Hand Ejector and dates to just before WWI in 1917. There was no production in 1918/1919 and production was resumed in Dec 1920 with Serial #16200.

Hey guys,

I have a S&W model 64-6.
38spl
4" barrel, I think
Round butt
6 shot
Fixed notch rear sight
Serial number CEM7xxx
Stamped on the yolk is the number 849
Stamped towards bottom right side of frame, under the grips, is 218xx 849

When I first got it years ago, I was new to handguns and took it to a gunsmith. Before firing it, I wanted it checked for safety and function. I think the story he told me when I picked it up was that it was one of 1,000 or so made by S&W for a NY police agency. I may be getting part of that story wrong.

What can you tell me about this gun? Was the info provided by the gunsmith correct?

Thanks!

the M64-6 fan from 1998 to 2002 when the ILS was adopted. Your gun seems to be dated to late 2000 or early 2001. I'm going to have to get a newer book because this one is not exact lol.

As for the NYPD guns, they are marked "NY-1" in the home cutout and all have bobbed hamners. If your gun doesn't have both its not an NYPD gun.

Thank you. It does have a bobbed hammer, forgot to mention that. I think I remember the gunsmith saying it was a special order for detectives. Maybe it wasn't NY. I don't know.

Just bought a 14-3 (K-38), 38spl., 6" barrel, blued, 6 shot, square butt,, adjustable sights, SN 10K2567. Thanks.

ArchAngelCD,

I appreciate the help you are giving us here. Would you be able to provide any more information?

As noted, the hammer is bobbed. I looked up my records and the gunsmith told me it was "rare" to leave factory in that configuration. My original post is 6941 and the follow up one is 6944. Maybe it was made for armored truck service and not a pd? The additional "849" on the crane is something unrelated to the markings it would have had when it left S&W, right?

Any thoughts on value? It is going up for sale.

Thanks a lot!

I'm sorry but I have no additional information. I suggest you request a letter for your revolver from S&W, they will tell you the exact configuration of that gun when it left the factory, no doubts.

Thanks ArchAngelCD, I appreciate the help you have given me.

I would, but it isn't worth it. I understand that S&W loves their customers enough to charge them $75 per letter, which I find quite distasteful.
