What is your time worth? I think that it is a bargain.

Would you be able to explain your comment further? What does my time have to do with it? I cannot trade my time and find out more by doing "legwork" on my own in this case anyway, as far as I can tell. They are the only ones that hold the information that can help me in this situation. If a clerk can research and letter 2, 3, 4+ guns per hour, the foundation is raking in $150 to $300+ per hour. That is quite an hourly rate for unskilled labor if you ask me. If my current job were on par with this, I would be earning at least a couple thousand dollars per hour.

On a $300 something dollar gun, which is going up for sale, spending $75 doesn't make sense.

I don't think that you understand the process any more than you did my comment.

Guys, this really isn't a discussion thread other than helping with dates. Cluttering it up makes that a little harder to do so please try to discuss other topics in another thread. Thank you.

Are you sure there is no J in front of the serial number?

My sources on this one are not completely clear. It lists 295000 as 1962 and then jumps to 786544 as 1969. Even though we have no way of knowing how many were made each year it would look like 1967 or 1968. The diamond grips were deleted in 1968 so you can also use that fact. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Please furnish info on this J frame Model 36 :
a- .38 SPL.
b- 2"
c- rd. butt
d- 5 shot
e- fixed sights
f- serial # 348xxx

Thanks.
Very similar to Post #6957 my sources on this one are not completely clear. It lists 295000 as 1962 and then jumps to 786544 as 1969. Your gun probably dates to 1963 or maybe 1964 but we have no way of knowing how many were made each year and rarely are the numbers linear. Sorry I can't nail it down better.

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...
a) 357
b) 4"
c) square
d) 6
e) target adjustable windage & elevation
f) S 307xxx
g) M 28

That's a 28-2, yes? Looks to be from 1968.
It's a 28 with no version number stamped. 1968 is about right though since IIRC I got it in 1969 or 1970.

AbE: it is also still a Highway Patrolman. Not sure when they dropped that designation.

With the 6 digit S it's likely a 60s gun.

I'm no expert so this old a revolver is a little out of my league but I will give it my best shot. I need more information. I need a picture of the other side of the gun. I could use any other info you see on the gun. A picture of the latch will help too.

I hope I can help you but I'm not sure.

a) 38S&W
b) 3¼"
c) round w/flat bottom
d) 5
e) worthless
f) 457395
g) DA 4th model top-break
The source in using is not exact on this revolver.
They run the numbers together like this:
1895-1909 4th 322701-539000
You can make an approximation but as we know, there is really no way to know how many were made each year. Best guess would be around 1903 but there's just my guess. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks. That's what I had seen myself but hoped for a more detailed breakdown. Wish I was in as good shape.
