Thanks for trying. There is no S prefix. I decided to mail in for a S&W letter of authenticity on it. I have had it for quite a while and just got interested in trying to find out a little more about it.

The letter is a good idea, sorry again.

Please come back and tell us what they tell you.

Probably 1969.

My sources list it this way:
1969 - 1971 M1 - M30000 so I'm thinking 1969 but as we know, there is no way to know how many were made each year and rarely are they equal each year. Being your serial number is under 9000 of 30000 it's probably the first year, 1969.

b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

Hello, probably 1957. Here is how they list the information.
1955 - 11000
1959 - 52673-62316

If you want to know exactly you might try writing S&W and they might be able to verify the date.

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...

Can anyone shed some light on model number(dash model) and date range on a M 29, serial number AVW3***?
Looking at one to purchase, but I’ve not handled to confirm - model or condition just yet ... thank you.

The DA 45 model above probably dates to the mid 1930s time frame, its the commercial version of the 1917:

There were several commercial models issued with serial numbers in the 177xxx-178xxx range. They seem to have shipped in the vicinity of 1924-25. The frames may have been made earlier for subsequent assembly. In all their variations, the 1917 .45s have a complicated start and stop history from 1917 to 1940 The Standard catalog of Smith and Wesson mentions on shipped in 1932 with a serial number of 180xxx. The S prefix denotes the hammer block safety which was added at serial number 185xxx.
