Model 48-4 82K51xx - 1980
Edit- sorry, I posted this without noticing the question was already answered on the next page.

Not a problem, and thank you as well!

I have a Model 60, 38 special. R1352xx. I inherited it from my dad, but have allowed it to remain with my mom as her home defense until her recent passing. I know when Dad got it, but it was a one owner at that time.
Thanks in advance.

My information tells me 1974 to 1977 the serial number range went from R100000 through R190000. Since there is no way to know how many revolvers were produced each year we can only guess. Your revolver probably dates to 1975 or 1976 but I can't be sure without asking S&W.

Thank you for the information!

I have a model 28-2 with a 4" barrel, 6 shot, target hammer, target trigger and target sights, .357 magnum, square butt with serial number: N895XX. If you an help with the date of manufacture it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Are you sure there are only 5 division the serial number? There should be 6.

If there are 6 there. Is another problem. The N8xxxxx series of guns run from 1980 to 1983. Your gun is a N89 number which should probably put it in 1983 but the 28-2 guns end in 1981 and the 28-3 guns to from 1982 to 1986 when they are discontinued. Sometimes S&W jumps around within the serial number range but they also usually tell us, there is no mention of this. If your barrel is pinned its from 1981.

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...

Please check

Thank you...

My sources are not exact on this one. All the N200000 guns run from 1974 to 1977 with most of the last half of the range being issued to M28s and M58s. Of course your gun has an earlier number. If I had to guess I would say 1974/1975 but since the distribution is rarely linear I can't know for sure.
