IDPA setup for 1911

Anyone use a 1911 for their IDPA fun time?

I brought my 1911 for my first IDPA last Saturday and realized that I was very ill-equipped. The only thing I had right was the Fobus paddle 1911 holster. But the 8 rounds ProMag magazines were crap, and I didn't have any magazine pouches neither.

Anyone have a favorite 1911 setup for IDPA??

I use the Comp-Tac Paddle hoslter and two Single Mag Pouches from them as well. I use CMC 8-round magazines.

Hey finz,

I see a lot of people using single mag pouches in the IDPA. Is there a reason for that?

In fact, I saw couple XD owners use single mag pouches even though their gun came with a factory double mag pouch. Is there an advantage of single mag pouch over the double mag ones?

For some, you can space them out for easier/faster mag changes.

I went for singles space further for IPSC and did the same for my new IDPA setup. I mocked up a double and found that it wasn't easy to get my fingers around the mag well enough to ensure a solid grip. And a dropped mag isn't a pretty thing.

Besides, singles lay on the belt around your waist more smoothly.

Nothing wrong with a Fobus holster for IDPA. Now, the mag pouches, particularly with a 1911, will save you some serious time. Don't get all caught up in the gear--you just need something to hold the gun (and mags) securely, then get your hits on the stages and do it at your fastest natural speed. If you get caughtup trying to match the shot cadence of a Master class shooter, you'll throw your hits all over the targets. Shoot at your speed, not theirs.

I generally use a Blackhawk CQC holster, but I started on Fobus. I've been known to use an MTAC, but it's hard to holster to so I generally go OWB. USPSA? That's a different ball game. There I use a CR Speed race holster, which is not legal in IDPA.

I agree, don't get too worried about having all the "right" gear, focus on getting hits on target. For 1911 magazines the only ones I use are Wilson Combat mags, they're pretty much the standard by which all others are judged.

I've just started IDPA myself. So far I've used my duty gun, a S&W 1911 9mm Pro Series, and a Springfield Loaded .45. Used my work gear, a Safariland 6377 ALS holster and a Blade-tech double mag pouch, Wilson ETM and Metalform mags for the 9mm and factory 7 shot mags for the .45. I've shot in two matches one IDPA (won ESP and overall, 3rd CDP) and a LE only match loosely based on IDPA (6th out of 50). I'm having a great time and I like using my everyday work gear and the extra trigger time. The nice people and fun are bonus!

Unless your everyday carry gear is totally incompatible with IDPA, I'd just use what you've got already. You should be fairly comfortable with it and if that's how you carry more practice with that gear will only benefit you.

I was at a IDPA match, this new shooter asked me if I had a spare holster, he had a 1911, .45 ACP. I only had a cut down Glock sport holster, which was for my carry/match Glock 19.

It took the 1911 perfect. So try the "Expensive" holster.

Reason it was suggested to me (and the reason I'm glad I listened) was that it's easier to adjust the location of the single pouches, depending on which pants/shorts I'm wearing that day. Different pants/shorts have belt loops located at different places. The two single pouches give me more options to locate the mag pouches around my belt loops, vs having a double pouch limit where I can locate it due to it's size (either in front or back of the loop for a double, vs front/back/or one on each side of the loop for single pouches).

Chip McCormick or Wilson Combat Magazines, maybe Metalform. Mag pouches I prefer the Blackhawk clip on, you will need 2. Holster I'm still experimenting...

www.brownells.com has a competition set for a great price for the 1911. blade tech holster that comes with the paddle or belt attachment, you use which ever one you want, and a double mag carrier. I stay away from fobus. I have 8 blade tech producs and they are all great, and they have been used very very hard in many training courses and events over the years.
