I find myself wanting a GSG carbine. Even though it really doesn't do anything my ruger 10/22 already does, and its just a .22 not a 7.62x39 or .223 .... it just looks fun.

Which had me thinking. I'm too old for airsoft but I have seen them and can see why kids think they are fun. It looks like something I would be interested in if I were younger. My thought is that someone could make a lot of money if they applied the same faux-tactical designs of airsoft to .22 rifles like what GSG has done. Am I wrong?

I think there could be some fun things if airsoft went .22 cal. eek:

there are some home (airsoft) mods to 10/22's such as : gutting out a g36 airsoft shell and putting a working 10/22 in there.

It is fun.:)

I liked it so well I bought the pistol.

And true, it doesn't really do anything that my 10/22 doesn't do as well, or better.

True they are both .22's but that's about where the similarities end.

If you want a 10/22 then buy a 10/22. If you want a GSG-5 then buy a GSG-5. One is not really a replacement or alternative to the other.

The simple truth is that a GSG-5 is not a 10/22 and that's why a lot of people own both and not one or the other. I love the GSG-5 because it's fun and interesting, I love the 10/22 because it's simply a great rifle.

I personally like the GSG-5 rifle more but that's only because I can't put a stock on the pistol one without a jumping through a bunch of legal hoops.

I like the concept & would like to see more / different stuff come out.

even though at the end of the day, they would all be .22 semi auto, pistols or rifles.

I also have the GSG-5 and the PK pistol. I bought one of the Colt 22 AR's and just got the S&W 22 AR. I also plan on getting the GSG AK and the SIG 522. I like the idea of having a 22 that is a look-alike of the centerfire rifle. For me it is the fun factor that they have. Also I use them with new shooters so that they can get the feel before letting them shoot the centerfire.
As far as the argument that a lot of people have about "it doesn't do anything that a 10/22 won't do." Well if that was the case we should all have the same 3-4 rifles and handguns since those will do the same thing as any other. I like having multiple different guns and you won't find me trying to talk anybody out of buying a new gun.:D

The PK is not very practical as a pistol, so...;)

I bought a GSG-5 SD instead of going with the usual Ruger 10/22.

It's as much fun as you can have with a .22LR. Based on cost I should have went with the 10/22, but even my dad likes to shoot it (he's not a gun guy). I bought a couple of the promag 22 round mags I found on google shopping for $14 a piece shipped and they work flawlessly. It doesn't like cheap ammo and it's not the easiest gun to clean.

Fun to shoot, accurate, and a cheap alternative to a real $2k H&K MP5.

Do you like the GSG or Colt more?

I don't really have a preference between those 2. They both have completely different feels. Now between the Colt and the S&W I like the S&W better. You can change out a lot of the parts on the Smith with most any standard AR components including the trigger.

Lots of companies are making tactical .22's, I really like them. It's a great idea as the tactical guns are fun, but a waste in bigger calibers unless you're a mall ninja. So these guns are awesome for people who want tactical fun but are aware they do not need a gun for door breaching or rappelling out of helicopters to stop shoplifters at one of the nation's largest indoor shopping centers.

You should check out the:

GSG AK
Ruger SR-22
Remington 597 Tactical? or something like that
Ruger 10/22 Tactical
Colt has a .22 tactical AR
S&W M&P 15-22

Also check out the Archangel kit for Ruger 10/22's. Not really "tactical" but there's a MG-42 kit for a 10/22 also

I'm not really so sure .... I mean, with Airsoft as it is you get full auto. Yeah they're 5mm. plastic BBs but if it went .22, then no FA. No new NFA stuff after 1987, remember?

I'm not saying people shouldn't have FA if they want, but I just don't see the point.
If you want a semiauto .22 "Airsoft" fine.
But why?

M2's gun above isn't Airsoft.

I'm confused by this thread. Is the OP saying that there should be a .22 round that fires a plastic BB or equivalent "skirmish safe" projectile.... or simply that there should be more .22 clones of other larger caliber guns like the GSG vs. mp5?

There's already a lot of Tacticool kits for .22lr firearms out there, as well as .22lr conversion kits for darn near anything under the sun.

I've seen 22 ARs, AKs, MP5/G3 replicas, even a kit that tried to make a 10/22 look like a tommy gun.

If you look long enough, it is out there.

The OP wished that there was as much variety for .22 cal firearms as there was for airsoft, in terms of the accessories.

It would be nice to have some .22 versions of more stuff, I know I would pick up quite a few of them. But to me there is still something special about the nice loud boom from larger rounds too
